In this article Tyler Lacoma examines the differences between Cloud Storage and Cloud Computing. The Author touches on the different points of Cloud Computing versus storage; describing what they mean, and how they’re used in the real world.

Christian Miles's curator insight, March 27, 10:46 AM

With cloud storage and computing becoming ever more popular, The next generation of computer could just have a screen and wifi with all the storage and processing power being done server side. This would allow for computers, phones, and so much more to be incredibly thin and small while having a near limitless amount of computing power and storage

Riordan Kelly's curator insight, March 29, 5:31 AM

Cloud storage is familiar to anyone who has an Android or I-phone, you upload your data to the cloud and it's secure. Cloud Computing however is even more mysterious. IT offers some amazing functionality and cost savings for business but for the average consumer it will become more and more a part of their experience on a computer.

It seems to be linked to 'Bing' in some way - my guess is that it's just Microsoft's way of getting more people onboard with OneDrive in a big way - at the end of the day, it will all be about head count on each platform and upselling users

Box is launching encryption keys that only you will hold

Box is launching encryption keys that only you will hold | Cloud Central | Scoop.it

If you put data on a cloud server, you're usually sharing it with more people than you realize. Cloud data is encrypted, but as long as the company manages the encryption keys, there are plenty of ways for third parties to gain access, whether it's a gag-ordered subpoena or something more sinister like PRISM. ...........

Peter Azzopardi's insight:

The idea is not new and I have rallied in favour of such a policy for a while now. There is no reason why encryption keys should be held by the storage provider. Of course all would be futile if Box's EKM is not sophisticated enough to withstand an attack. Box feels it is, good!.

Past rumours that Mega's (another storage company that passes over the encryption keys) encryption methods had been compromised did not help this camp. Nonetheless, the idea is sound and post PRISM development should be focused in this area.
