European Commission : CORDIS : Newsroom : Cloud computing: facilitating cutting edge collaborative research

European Commission : CORDIS : Newsroom : Cloud computing: facilitating cutting edge collaborative research | Cloud Central | Scoop.it

Cloud computing - where storage facilities are provided on demand over the internet from shared data centres - enables effective research collaboration to blossom. Rather than having to purchase a cluster of computers or struggle to find space at the lab, researchers can outsource their computing storage needs to remote facilities in the cloud and make this data accessible to colleagues.

Peter Azzopardi's insight:

CERN's computing capacity needs to keep up with the enormous amount of data coming from the Large Hadron Collider and we see Helix Nebula as a great way of working with industry to meet this challenge,' said Frédéric Hemmer, head of CERN's IT department.

Higgs boson researchers consider move to cloud computing

Higgs boson researchers consider move to cloud computing | Cloud Central | Scoop.it

How did European researchers working on the Higgs boson recently make one of the most revolutionary physics discoveries in recent decades? From an IT perspective, they relied on a good old-fashioned grid computing infrastructure, though a new cloud-based one may be in the offing.

CERN, Rackspace Collaborate on Hybrid Cloud - Network Computing

CERN, Rackspace Collaborate on Hybrid Cloud - Network Computing | Cloud Central | Scoop.it
CERN, home of the Large Hadron Collider, and Rackspace have announced a joint project to develop a hybrid cloud based on OpenStack.
Peter Azzopardi's insight:

An amazing project with a huge team of specialists.

"A typical use case would be where the demand from the physicists exceeds the resources that are available in the CERN clouds," said Bell. "This often occurs coming up to scientific conferences in order to process the latest data from the LHC and its experiments in order to improve scientific precision of their analysis."

CERN says EU data protection laws are hindering cloud adoption ( - Hardware Systems )

CERN says EU data protection laws are hindering cloud adoption ( - Hardware Systems ) | Cloud Central | Scoop.it
Researchers at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva are being held back from adopting cloud computing on any significant scale due to the delay in establishing a European regulatory framework for data protection.
Speaking at the Cloud Computing World Forum in London this week, Bob Jones, head of CERN openlab, said that the European Commission's failure to push through clear guidelines for data protection in the cloud was hindering uptake within the scientific community
