The trend I see growing the fastest in the cloud computing space is that of customisation, as enterprises build out cloud infrastructures and solutions that work best for them.

However, according to Gartner, the best — or worst, depending on your perspective — has yet to come. It seems Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications are doomed to legacy status or even the trash bin.

Getting ERP in the cloud. Intriguing, are enterprises that spent millions establishing their ERP in the first place ready to move it to the cloud (which will cost quite a lot) or are they planning to circumvent the existing environment and slowly migrate functionality till nothing's left?

As well as lower costs, business agility, flexibility and ease of use are still the main attractions for using the cloud. European Commission research, which questioned almost 500 companies, showed that over 80 per cent of those who were already using the cloud, saw a reduction in IT costs of between 10 and 20 per cent. 12 per cent saw an impressive 30 per cent or more reduction.
