The cloud space continues to evolve at an astounding pace. As recently as 12 months ago, we were still educating many clients about what they could achieve with cloud computing. We tirelessly explained the differences and benefits of options such as Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). We also debated the suitability of various architectural alternatives, like private, public or hybrid cloud. While there continues to be some mystique Topic: Information Management.

As cloud computing becomes ever more pervasive, future models will begin to revolve around XaaS. Anything as a service, everything as a service, more as a service, call it what you will. The overall effect is that a new type of service will deliver IaaS, PaaS and SaaS in one package.

Interesting  article.  Cloud computing requires though (in addition  to overcoming the security barriers/perceptions and fears)  good Quality of Service - users want an experience as if resources are local- and also, good management capabilities on both ends (users and providers). One has to ask the question: what are the risks of NOT moving to the cloud...

James Coombes's curator insight, December 21, 2013 10:48 AM

This is a brief article arguing that "cloud-based workloads" should be assessed according to performance, control and cost. The author works for NetApp, so his approach, unsurprisingly, revolves around cloud storage specifically. I think there is more to consider when assessing cloud services, but these are definitely key considerations from an IT professional's perspective.

X as a service (XaaS): What the future of cloud computing will bring | L'Univers du Cloud Computing dans le Monde et Ailleurs | Scoop.it

What is XaaS? Is this just more marketing fluff? Why do we need to define yet another model to fully describe cloud services? I contest that XaaS is a legitimate term, and that it is useful to describe a new type of cloud services — those that make use of IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS all neatly delivered in one package. Such packages are intended to fully displace the delivery of a commodity IT service.
