Microservices, SOA, and APIs: Friends or enemies?

Microservices, SOA, and APIs: Friends or enemies? | L'Univers du Cloud Computing dans le Monde et Ailleurs | Scoop.it

Comparing a microservices architecture and service-oriented architecture (SOA) is a sensitive topic and often cause for a swift source of disagreement.

This article examines where these controversies stem from and considers how best to resolve them. It then looks forward to see how these concepts are combining with those of API management to enable more agile, decentralized, and resilient enterprise architectures.

Patrick Bouillaud's insight:

"Service" term is always discuss to talk about since it has a lot of room for interpretation. No matter the level of service you will discuss about, you will always find people to argue with you.

Micro-services, APIs and SOA are not an exception to this rule. As usual, when you end up in such confusion, you must start by defining what you and your interlucutor mean by "service". Once this is done, and only when this is done, you will be able to have a fruitful discussion.

In this article, the proposed simple definitions, are the following:

Microservices architecture is an alternative approach to structuring applications. An application is broken into smaller, completely independent components, enabling them to have greater agility, scalability, and availability.SOA exposes the functions of applications as more readily accessible service interfaces, making it easier to use their data and logic in the next generation of applications.

Stay with this infographic because its subject, how cloud computing changes website development, information architecture, mobile computing and....well everything, is important. Important enough to decipher this dense infographic (lol).

I found this article answered many questions I had about "The Cloud"...I thought I would share it with you...

Emeric Nectoux's curator insight, March 16, 2014 9:15 AM

Not that complicated, isn't it? I even manage to explain it to my mother the other day :)

Now, thanks to these infographics, you even have the means to find out the ROI for your own organisation,
