The road to clean energy in Rwanda | Climate Change: Science, Risk, Economics, Energy & Sustainability | Scoop.it
In Rwanda, like much of Sub-Saharan Africa, less than 25 per cent of the population has access to electricity. Without easy access to light at night to do homework or tend to a crying baby, there are huge education and health costs to a lack of electricity.

The World Needs a Radical Change in Both Supply and Demand to Reach Paris Agreement

The World Needs a Radical Change in Both Supply and Demand to Reach Paris Agreement | Climate Change: Science, Risk, Economics, Energy & Sustainability | Scoop.it
The climate agreement reached in Paris was an unprecedented global achievement. Unfortunately, the climate action plans submitted by the signatory countries fall far short of the energy shift the world needs. Recently released reports by the Energy Transitions Commission highlight what needs to be done to limit global temperature rise to well below 2 degrees C and elaborate on pathways for how to go about doing it.

Why Google, Ikea Say ‘The Paris Effect’ Is Boosting Business · Environmental Leader

Why Google, Ikea Say ‘The Paris Effect’ Is Boosting Business · Environmental Leader | Climate Change: Science, Risk, Economics, Energy & Sustainability | Scoop.it
"Tomorrow — on Earth Day — more than 160 countries including the US will sign the Paris climate agreement. In advance of the signing, thousands of businesses are urging governments to enact policies that support a low-carbon economy, which they say presents a multi-trillion-dollar economic opportunity."
Eric B. Schupper, ScM, JD's insight:
Climate action is not just necessary to maintain a biosphere habitable for life as we know it, it is perhaps the greatest, most transformational economic opportunity of the 21st century. The global business community gets it. And if policy makers can't be persuaded by the evidence scientists present, perhaps they can be moved by the hundreds of global companies calling for policies that will help unlock this enormous economic potential.

The Future of Carbon Financing for Low Carbon Development | Natural Capital Partners

The Paris Climate Agreement has established the strongest ever international consensus supporting action on climate change. Yet while the agreement defines the "what", many aspects of "how" are still to be laid out, including the role of carbon finance and carbon offsetting. During this 45 minute webinar, our panelists discuss the essential role of offsetting as part of an integrated approach to climate action, delivering finance to high quality projects for emission reductions and impact on the Sustainable Development Goals.

Climate Change Builds the Case for Increased Resiliency - Energy Manager Today

Climate Change Builds the Case for Increased Resiliency - Energy Manager Today | Climate Change: Science, Risk, Economics, Energy & Sustainability | Scoop.it
Unfortunately, floods and fires that were once considered 500 and 1,000 year events are occurring on a 5 to 10 year basis, and experts project that the frequency and intensity will only continue to increase.
Eric B. Schupper, ScM, JD's insight:
Good piece on the topic of resiliency. Mitigation seems to garner the greater share of climate change attention. But with the effects of climate change growing increasingly frequent, severe, and costly, and with our failure to curtail emissions at rates commensurate with what scientists and experts say is needed, we need to increase our focus on the resilience side of climate change. We're locked in for the foreseeable future to adverse climate conditions that are a new normal against which we must plan, prepare, and build resilience.

The Business Value of Demand Flexibility

The Business Value of Demand Flexibility | Climate Change: Science, Risk, Economics, Energy & Sustainability | Scoop.it
Electricity is the lifeblood of our society, but building more electric power capacity is expensive. Fortunately, there's a lower-cost approach, similar to the method that telecom, cable, and Internet companies have been using for decades to manage peak demand on their networks. Instead of building redundant capacity for each user, these networks intelligently manage both demand and supply.
