Gorged to bursting point, the vulture watches impassively as the twister whips a column of dust past the sun-parched remains of cattle dotting the barren field. If there were such a thing as a textbook image of drought, then this could well be it.

Climate Change Plays a Role in Wildfires—But Not the Only One

Climate Change Plays a Role in Wildfires—But Not the Only One | Climate change challenges | Scoop.it

While we’re changing the climate—loading the dice, in the climate scientist Michael Mann’s term, to make extreme weather more likely—we’re also changing the situation on the ground, moving ever larger numbers of people into fire-prone zones. It’s as if we’re adding fuel to the fire on both ends—which means we’ll be doubly burned.

We’re Already Topping Dust Bowl Temperatures — Imagine What’ll Happen If We Fail To Stop 10°F Warming

We’re Already Topping Dust Bowl Temperatures — Imagine What’ll Happen If We Fail To Stop 10°F Warming | Climate change challenges | Scoop.it
This heat wave has broken thousands of temperature records. Climate Central reported Satuday, “In many cases, records that had stood since the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s have been equaled or exceeded, and this event is likely to go down in history as one of America’s worst.”
In general, we expect the greatest number of temperature records to be set during a widespread drought.

Warning From Maldives: 'You Can't Pick And Choose On Science'

Warning From Maldives: 'You Can't Pick And Choose On Science' | Climate change challenges | Scoop.it
Mohamed Nasheed, former president of the Maldives, has some words of climate change warning for the United States: "You can't pick and choose on science." Nasheed should know.

Dramatic rises in sea level due to global warming are expected to overrun his and other low-lying island nations over the next century. Scientists predict that the Maldives in the Indian Ocean might be completely underwater by 2100 or at least uninhabitable due to the loss of fresh water and agricultural options. ...

Along with being an outspoken advocate for climate action, Nasheed is also a fervent campaigner for democracy. Once designated a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International, he was imprisoned numerous times by the previous autocratic regime. His 2008 election as president marked the end of the 30-year rule of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and the start of a new era.

Recently, Nasheed's efforts were recognized with the James Lawson Award for Achievement in the Practice of Nonviolent Action from the Washington, D.C.-based International Center on Nonviolent Conflict.

Now That the Weather Is Going Crazy, Americans Believe In Climate Change Again

Now That the Weather Is Going Crazy, Americans Believe In Climate Change Again | Climate change challenges | Scoop.it

Before the financial crisis hit, Americans were pretty sure that the globe was warming, and that humans were causing it, and that it was kind of a big deal. As the economy slumped, Americans decided that climate change wasn’t actually happening—and even if it was, it wasn’t our fault. And now, after a flurry of wild weather—deadly tornados, floods, droughts, an uncommonly mild winter, and recent heat waves—U.S. residents are back to believing that global warming is real. But we’re still hesitant to take the blame.
