Teaching New Forms of Storytelling, from Database Narratives to Quantum Journalism

Teaching New Forms of Storytelling, from Database Narratives to Quantum Journalism | Climate change challenges | Scoop.it

When college students get a syllabus on the first day of class, they expect it to lay out exactly what will happen during the course: its goals, tasks and deadlines. Finding that they're expected to deal with "flexibility," "adaptability," "rapid change," and "making mistakes" might be unnerving.

However, those are likely to be the characteristics of innovative journalism classes that teach new forms of storytelling. At the AEJMC conference this summer, Google News head Richard Gingras called for journalism educators to think beyond today's standard news site architecture and story structures and to teach journalism students the tools of computer science and product design.

Study Finds News Corp. Climate Coverage Is "Overwhelmingly Misleading"

Study Finds News Corp. Climate Coverage Is "Overwhelmingly Misleading" | Climate change challenges | Scoop.it

A new report by the Union of Concerned Scientists finds that coverage of climate science by Fox News and the Wall Street Journal -- both owned by Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation -- has been "overwhelmingly misleading," despite Murdoch's 2007 pledge that his media outlets will treat manmade climate change as "a fact."

The Union of Concerned Scientists analyzed six months of Fox News coverage and found that 93% of representations of climate science were "misleading." These segments either broadly dismissed the scientific consensus that manmade climate change is occurring, or drowned out accurate information on climate science with misleading claims.

Four-degree rise demands 90-degree rethink

Four-degree rise demands 90-degree rethink | Climate change challenges | Scoop.it

Climate change has moved into a new and dangerous phase. The Arctic has been warming two to three times faster than the rest of the world. In the past few weeks, melting of the Arctic sea ice has accelerated dramatically, reducing the area and volume to levels never previously experienced. About 80 per cent of the summer sea-ice has been lost since 1979; on current trends the Arctic will be ice-free in summer by 2015 and ice-free all year by 2030 - events that were not expected to occur for another 100 years. More concerning, the Greenland ice sheet this year has had unprecedented melting, adding to a trend that will substantially increase sea levels.
