Penguin parents: Inability to share roles increases their vulnerability to climate change: Young penguins suffer at feeding time due to an inflexible division of parental duties | Climate change challenges | Scoop.it
The fixed division of labor between crested penguin parents increases their chicks' vulnerability to food shortages made ever more common by climate change. The parents have been unable to adapt their habits to the challenges of increasingly frequent years of limited food supply and, as a result, will become further threatened by extinction.

''These are not future problems, but rather urgent matters, according to Steffen, who said that the economic boom since 1950 and the globalized economy have accelerated the transgression of the boundaries. No one knows exactly when push will come to shove, but he said the possible destabilization of the “Earth System” as a whole could occur in a time frame of “decades out to a century.”'

Metropolis Farms wants to bring back the artisan farmer

Metropolis Farms wants to bring back the artisan farmer | Climate change challenges | Scoop.it
With booming populations to feed and less arable land to grow food on, food scarcity, something Thomas Robert Malthus predicted in 1798 and our children will feel the effects of in their lifetime, is one of the driving concerns behind the growing popularity of vertical farming, a modern agricultural concept where food is grown in stacks inside urban buildings using artificial lighting, climate control and other high-tech systems. - Tracey Romero, Philadelphia Philly.com
Cathryn Wellner's insight:

When I was a kid, this kind of farming would have been considered part of a dystopian future. Now it may be a matter of survival.
