European Commision report: Europe faces deadly cost for climate inaction

European Commision report: Europe faces deadly cost for climate inaction | Climate change | Scoop.it
A study by the European Commission spells out the probable cost to the continent of failing to act to reduce the impacts of climate change.
Centre for Climate Safety's insight:

A failure to act to reduce the impacts of climate change oould cost Europe dear in lives lost and economic damage, according to a European Commission study.

LONDON, 13 July 2014 − Inaction over climate change costs lives. And in the case of European inaction, it is estimated that this could one day cost 200,000 lives a year.

That is the warning in a new European Commission (EC) study, which also says that failing to take the necessary action could burn 8,000 square kilometres of forest, and commit European taxpayers to at least €190 billion (US$259 bn) a year in economic losses.

Flood damage, too, could exceed €10bn a year by 2080, while the number of people affected by droughts could increase sevenfold, and coastal damage from sea level rise could treble.

The study weighs the bleak consequences of inaction. Scientists considered what would happen if the politicians and players on the continent worked with international partners to constrain global warming to a 2°C rise, or alternatively took no action and allowed global temperatures to soar to 3.5°C. They analysed the impact of climate change in agriculture, river floods, coasts, tourism, energy, droughts, forest fires, transport infrastructure and human health.

“Commodity analysts at Citi and Goldman Sachs argue that coal's investment outlook is horrible, with it under siege from three global forces that Australian governments seem to believe don't exist.”

“Australian governments are essentially powerless as a series of major global changes unfold that will curtail demand for coal and mean there is little need for any new coal mines for the next decade.”

Russia: Mysterious giant hole in Siberia likely caused by global warming

Russia: Mysterious giant hole in Siberia likely caused by global warming | Climate change | Scoop.it

Aerial video footage shows debris and apparent signs of an explosion or impact around the massive crater, which is about 18 miles from the area’s biggest gas field, Bovanenkovo.

Dr. Chris Fogwill, a polar scientist from the University of New South Wales, said the crater was most likely caused by a geological phenomenon called a pingo. A pingo is a block of ice that forms under frozen arctic hillsides that can eventually push through the earth and leave an exposed crater once it melts away.

Scientists observe much more activity in permafrost areas than in the historical past. It relates to the high degree of warming around these high arctic areas which are experiencing some of the highest rates of warming on Earth.

Will the climate debate end up being fought in court?

Will the climate debate end up being fought in court? | Climate change | Scoop.it

With the IPCC so clearly stating the need for action, could politicians and even scientists be charged with 'climate negligence' in the future?

Neglecting to take action can be considered criminal. In the same way that doctors who fail to diagnose an illness may be charged with malpractice, politicians can face similar charges for failing to adequately do their jobs. These crimes may seem more clear-cut – but what happens when it comes to accountability for environmental issues, and more specifically, climate change?
