When it comes to language teaching, we all face a problem, how to correct students' work, give them feedback and assess them in the right way. As this blogpost describes it, "The feedback you give—and how you deliver it—can be the difference between motivating a student who has an “a-ha” moment thanks to your correction and unintentionally discouraging a student who then becomes disengaged or afraid."

And this is why, this blogpost is so important, it clarifies all the doubts someone as a teacher could have about language assessment. You should give it a read!!

Valeria Garcia Lopez's curator insight, September 17, 12:39 PM
Considering this article, I think that we as foreign language teachers have an important role in students' motivation to learn a new language. The first strategy presented in this article to increase motivation is the "start students past Zero", which is about not start from zero but to show students that they already know some words of the target language due to the fact that these words are similar (cognates); so students will feel motivated to continue learning the new language. Additionally, a way to increase motivation is by suddenly mentioning their names as well as giving students some intermediate questions; these questions are recommended to be intermediate since students will find them challenging to answer and once they get the answer they will feel motivated to continue learning the target language. If the questions are either easy or hard, students will lose motivation to continue learning. Finally, we should not be concentrated just on the mistakes students do when learning a new language, but also we can highlight the good things they do right. When we concentrate more on gthe mistakes, students will feel like if they are not good enough for learning this new language so they start to lose the motivation; and playing music in the classroom to learn a new topic is also a good strategy to increase motivation in students.
