Q&A with Marie Calloway: Why does she write about sex?

Q&A with Marie Calloway: Why does she write about sex? | Women: Relationships, alcohol, porn, lesbians, masturbation, swinging, fantasy, female sex predators and orgasm | Scoop.it

For several years, Marie Calloway, 23, has explicitly described her lifestyle and sexual exploits on her blog. Now Calloway (a pseudonym she has used since the age of 19) has published a book, "what purpose did i serve in your life" (Tyrant Books, $19), said to be an account of her sexual encounters.

In "what purpose did i serve in your life," Calloway opens up about her relationships, which predominantly originate from cyber contact, as well as her sexual fantasies, largely involving self-degradation. In fact, her words and pornographic photographs (including images of her breasts covered in bruises) were considered so controversial that three separate printers refused to print the book.

A former women’s studies major, Calloway first garnered attention with her story "Adrien Brody," published on MuuMuu House, in which she describes a brief affair with a well-known New York editor. Since then, readers have been attempting to label her as either a trailblazing feminist or a self-destructive masochist.

Sex Overseas: 'What Soldiers Do' Complicates WWII History : NPR

Sex Overseas: 'What Soldiers Do' Complicates WWII History : NPR | Women: Relationships, alcohol, porn, lesbians, masturbation, swinging, fantasy, female sex predators and orgasm | Scoop.it

Americans often think of World War II as the "good war," but historian Mary Louise Roberts says her new book might make our understanding of that conflict "more truthful and more complex." The book, What Soldiers Do: Sex and the American GI in World War II France, tells the story of relations between American men and French women in Normandy and elsewhere.

The Americans were liberators; the French were liberated. But sex created tensions and resentments that were serious, yet were utterly absent from contemporary accounts for American audiences back home. Roberts, who is professor of European history at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, suggests that the tensions weren't entirely accidental: "Sex was fundamental to how the U.S. military framed, fought and won the war in Europe," she writes in her book.

Roberts joins NPR's Robert Siegel to talk about prostitutes in parks and cemeteries, pinups on planes and how the U.S. Army responded to rape accusations with rapid, racially charged trials.

Dear John Letters: An Anthology of Stories from Hookers, Customers, and Assorted Sex Workers

Dear John Letters: An Anthology of Stories from Hookers, Customers, and Assorted Sex Workers | Women: Relationships, alcohol, porn, lesbians, masturbation, swinging, fantasy, female sex predators and orgasm | Scoop.it

Sex workers have become much more visible in politics and culture over the last couple of decades. Thanks to a surge of activism starting in the 1990s, memoirs and essays about sex work have become their own subgenre. Even in liberal circles, a lot of stigma still remains, but publicly admitting that you're an escort, stripper, or porn star is a lot more likely to be accepted as a valid choice.

But while the workers have been able to edge ever so slightly into the daylight, the clients have remained securely and silently in the shadows. With their new anthology, Johns, Marks, Tricks, and Chicken Hawks: Professionals and Clients Writing About Each Other,co-editors David Henry Sterry and R.J. Martin, Jr. are trying to shift the conversation to include both sides of the transaction. Sterry, and Martin will be reading at The Booksmith on Haight Street tonight along with several contributors. Sterry, who worked as a rent boy when he was 17, talked to us about sex, money, and how to be a good client.

The year was 1970 B.E.L.J. (Before E.L. James) and I was a freshman in high school. Midnight Cowboy (1969) had just become the only X-rated movie ever to win the Oscar for Best Picture, foreshadowing a decade of sexually bold expression.
