Oil Sands Mining Uses Up Almost as Much Energy as It Produces | InsideClimate News

Oil Sands Mining Uses Up Almost as Much Energy as It Produces | InsideClimate News | CleanTech Opportunities and Trends | Scoop.it

The average "energy returned on investment," or EROI, for conventional oil is roughly 25:1. In other words, 25 units of oil-based energy are obtained for every one unit of other energy that is invested to extract it.

But tar sands oil is in a category all its own.

Tar sands retrieved by surface mining has an EROI of only about 5:1, according to research released Tuesday. Tar sands retrieved from deeper beneath the earth, through steam injection, fares even worse, with a maximum average ratio of just 2.9 to 1. That means one unit of natural gas is needed to create less than three units of oil-based energy.

Phil Dillard's insight:

This article reminds me of the importance of considering the entire value chain in evaluating the benefits of an energy solution. More research on EROI of energy alternatives should be conducted.

Phil Dillard's insight:

Carbon tax in China. An interesting start, but possibly a long way to go. This is worth following because it could further increase the economic viability of CleanTech solutions in China and across Asia. I'm not yet extremely familiar with the success of different carbon tax schemes, but this is something to keep an eye on.

94% Renewable Electricity By 2017 Is Goal For Nicaragua

94% Renewable Electricity By 2017 Is Goal For Nicaragua | CleanTech Opportunities and Trends | Scoop.it

Nicaragua has one of the most aggressive renewable energy goals in the world -- it intends to have 94% of its electricity come from renewable energy by 2017.
Phil Dillard's insight:

This is an interesting article to highlight not only Nicaragua's success, but that of the other 50+ countries listed as more than 50+ renewable currently. It highlights the significance of hydro power - the source of most of the RPS for these countries. It should probably also be contrasted against increasing demand for power, population and urbanization to see how these successes could really be translated into something that matters on a larger scale. This could be an interesting research project...for someone.

Accelerators: A Critical Component in Scaling Up Environmental Entrepreneurship | WRI Insights | CleanTech Opportunities and Trends | Scoop.it
Phil Dillard's insight:

This is yet another analysis that highlights the value that accelerators can bring to the market. While this one focuses more on impact investment in developing countries, the impact of investments in CleanTech solutions is no less global, and in strong demand. I believe that these types of investments and investors are close cousins, and will benefit from information sharing and collaborations that will blur the lines between traditional and impact investing.

Under Construction: Zero Net Energy Center in San Leandro (photos) - San Francisco Business Times | CleanTech Opportunities and Trends | Scoop.it

This is a very interesting sign of the future of "green" building. The future home for training of the IBEW will train electricians about sustainble building practices. I'd love to see such a facility as a potential partner to test and implement new technologies in the market. Training and commercialization centers may be critical resources in order to transition the bay area to, as Joseph Caggiano (from Chevron Energy Technology Company) said last week "from a lab to a hub of energy solutions". Keep an eye on developments like this.
