Green Field Energy Services Conducts First-Ever Frac Pump Test Powered 100 percent by Field Gas | CleanTech Opportunities and Trends | Scoop.it
Lafayette, LA (SPX) Jan 08, 2013 -
Green Field Energy Services (GFES), in conjunction with Apache Corporation, performed the first-ever operation of a Frac Pump utilizing field gas as its sole fuel source.
Phil Dillard's insight:

This looks like a step in the right direction. If going to be Fracing, better to use local field gas instead of bringing in diesel to run the pumps. This sounds like a no-brainer.Very curious about the technical challenges of the gas as on site power.

Toilet-to-Tank Project Produces First Algae Biomass Crops · Environmental Management & Energy News · Environmental Leader | CleanTech Opportunities and Trends | Scoop.it
Phil Dillard's insight:

As methane is a harmful greenhouse gase, municipal waste water treatment facilities traditionally try to limit its production. Some of the most advanced use the methane to make the anaerobic digestion more efficient or to generate power from local generators. The process posed in this pilot is great thinking. In trying to maximize the value of the feed stock, and by using what other people see as waste to do it, they reveal a sustainable solution with serious potential. It is refreshing to see that this is possilble. While consumption as biofuel may not prove to be the highest and best use of the methane, the thinking and the results of the pilot are very interesting.

General Motors, Honda To Produce Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Cars By 2020 As Auto ...
Phil Dillard's insight:

The good news in this story is that this is happening in a manner that should facilitate actual implementation of the technology and the infrastructure required to support these cars on the road. Additionally, as these 2 behemoth companies share costs and intellect to develop the technology, there should be standardization of components in the value chain that should reduces costs due to the scale of these operations. The bad news (if any) is that entrepreneurs driving new technologies may have already been absorbed...thus limiting new competition to these large incumbents.

Additionally, we should explore how to resolve some of the core issues related to the volume of plastic being disposed of in the first place. There are better solutions than the materials we are using now.

Responding to Climate Change
The UN has encouraged countries to review their biofuel policies to ensure they do not conflict with food security issues.
Phil Dillard's insight:

This one should be no surprise. Countries should consider making food for people as much (if no more so) than fuel. These may not be such complex calculations and should lead to a more comprehensive perspective on the importance of comprehensive sustainability policies.

This is a really interesting series on CSR. It is important to note that companies large and small can have a significant and positive impact on the  adoption of CleanTech as part of sustainability programs. This series is worth investigating to understand more about how CSR is linked to Sustainability. I like to say that this issue is not about being a super-green environmentalist. Rather, this issue is about coming to the understanding of economic and environmental realities of living on a finite, resource constrained planet.

Is 3D printing an environmental win?

Is 3D printing an environmental win? | CleanTech Opportunities and Trends | Scoop.it
The 3D printing revolution promises to eliminate waste in manufacturing. Let's take a closer look.
Phil Dillard's insight:

I met Jeremy at a recent conference on 3D printing where we talked about this study. It is impressive, and insightful. The key take away, however is not too surprising. It all depends on how you use the tool and your responsible use of energy!

Considering this lesson provides for some insights for people who think about commercialization all day long. For something like this to be a big commercial hit, the tool must solve an important problem for those who can use the tool optimally themselves or if they can harvest the economic benefit or ecological goodwill from a more sustainable approach. A scalable business model for commercial 3D printing would take this into account and find a way for large numbers of prototypers to take advantage.

My particular self-interest in 3D printing was to consider how to use bioplastic in these machines so that certain products could be biodegradable and/or compostable. The source of feedstock was not something that Jeremy covered, but we hope to be able to explore that in the future, so that we can prove that low cost, sustainably developed bioplastics (i.e. Bioplastic from waste), can provide a deeper economic and ecological benefit.

392 megawatts (MW) of solar is a lot. Brazil, which has been a wind energy leader for a long time, has started to get going in the solar energy arena.
Phil Dillard's insight:

Brazil is another important international market that should drive innovation in the industry. Interestingly, solar is the cheapest form of power in Brazil. I have not done the economic analysis to determine the short term and long term impacts of this policy. However, it does highlight how a national energy policy can make renewable energy the "right thing to do" both for economic and environmental reasons.
