Advent of Google means we must rethink our approach to education

Advent of Google means we must rethink our approach to education | #classroomtech | Scoop.it

Teaching in an environment where the internet and discussion are allowed in exams would be different. The ability to find things out quickly and accurately would become the predominant skill. The ability to discriminate between alternatives, then put facts together to solve problems would be critical. AThat's a skill that future employers would admire immensely.

Reinventing schools -  today's educational challenge -  from TED 2013 prizewinner Sugata Mitra.

William Hanna's curator insight, June 18, 2013 8:25 AM

Wow!  Allowing internet access and discussion during exams???  As bizarre as it sounds, I think it's awesome!  Instead of teaching our kids to memorize everything, we could teach them to THINK!  A good thing indeed.

Jacqui Cooper's curator insight, June 18, 2013 11:14 AM

Well as employers in the UK (and I suspect elsewhere) are complaining about students leaving school without the right skills, the schools should be looking at this seriously.

Why online education is mostly a fantasy

Why online education is mostly a fantasy | #classroomtech | Scoop.it

In the end, MOOCs and online programs primarily help those who are self motivated to learn, and the vast majority of these people would have figured out how to educate themselves, whether in college or on their own, regardless of whether or not online courses are available.

There need not be a dichotomy of online learning and having the personalized attention of a teacher/coach. This article, and others like it, are misguided if their point is that online education will forever remain a fantasy; they are valuable articles in that they correctly note what's limiting and/or dysfunctional now to set us on course to the new "reality" of online and blended learning being superior to traditional "brick and mortar" education.

Teachers learning about and with ICT as collaborative design

Teachers learning about and with ICT as collaborative design | #classroomtech | Scoop.it

The key concept in all these initiatives is collaborative design. Collaboration and design have been increasingly promoted and explored in the years following the emergence of the WWW mostly because of the alignment of network technologies, a growing interest for the socially situated and communal nature of work and learning, and the development of design-based research as a promising approach to foster innovations in education. The notion of “communities of practice” has certainly provided useful conceptual tools to understand teaching as composed of a joint enterprise, a shared repertoire of knowledge and artifacts, and mutual engagement in community activities, roles, and relationships.

Collaborative design is certainly an area that's close to my heart and at the core of the true power of the internet and online learning.

Evelyn Izquierdo's curator insight, June 22, 2013 3:53 PM

Collaboration in a must when using ICT. Based on that purpose, communities of practice become useful spaces to share, learn and grow together professionally. If you are starting in the ICT field, I recommend you to websearch about "well known" or "recognized" communities in your teaching field; as well as creating a Twitter  account, so you can start building your personal learning network (PLN). Follow the leaders in your field, very soon you will be participating in collaborative projects; sharing ideas, resources and materials; or simply enjoying your new discoveries. :)

Is Scoop.it the new Twitter? | #classroomtech | Scoop.it

The other big advantage of Scoop.it is that discussion is based around content, which can help to give the interaction more depth. It also helps user to escape much of the banality that appears on Twitter as it tends not to attract the celebrity or 'what I had for lunch' postings as it isn't principally about conversation, but as more of a focus on content sharing.

In a nutshell it's "look at this" vs. "look at me". And the spirits that drive the two are largely distinct, as this study (found on Scoop.it) attests http://mashable.com/2013/06/12/social-media-narcissism-study/. I know which spirits grab me!
