16 Of Science's Best Infographics, From Ancient Greece To Today

16 Of Science's Best Infographics, From Ancient Greece To Today | Clássicas | Scoop.it
Throughout history, the best data visualizations have served as the public's window onto a complex world.

In a time when everything from the endangerment of the Juggalo to Carrie Bradshaw's shoe collection is turned into a clever little chart, it can be easy to dismiss infographics as trendy and inconsequential. But since ancient Greece, the best data visualizations have furthered popular understanding of science, serving as the nonacademic public’s key to knowledge. Some vintage infographics were even used as political tools, effecting social change through educational campaigns.

Beautiful Science: Picturing Data, Inspiring Insight, now on view at the British Library, takes us through the history of data visualization, focusing on themes of public health, weather, and evolution. From a millennia-old illustration of the “Great Chain of Being” to a 2008 NASA animation of the oceans' currents, we see how data visualizers have always sought to turn dense and impenetrable scientific information into accessible, beautiful images, using good design to make learning smoother.

(EN) - A Dictionary of Classical Mythology | M. R. Wright | Clássicas | Scoop.it

"This Dictionary of Classical Mythology marks a fresh start in the complex task of mapping, cataloguing and reporting on the body of material that guides the contemporary reader through the mythology of Ancient Greece and Early Rome.

Different versions of the narratives and genealogies in this material are endemic to the study of the subject, since variations were preserved in the tradition of oral culture, and then adapted to the interests of family and city propaganda, the literary contexts of drama and poetry, the evolution of ritual and the expansion of knowledge of the physical and human aspects of the inhabited world.

Yet, despite the variations, common themes of quests, vengeance and homecoming and patterns of character such as 'first woman', 'youngest son', 'cruel stepmother' and 'shape-shifter' persist through legend, folk-tale and saga, and have their most articulate expression in the myths (the μύθοι and 'fabulae') of Greek and Roman literature and art. And not only do we have the narratives preserved but also the ancient attempts to probe and interpret them through allegory, personification and ..."
