Toward livelier orchestra programs: Pick a theme

Toward livelier orchestra programs: Pick a theme | Classical Music Audience-Building | Scoop.it
Thematic programs could be stimulating — and more marketable — alternatives to unrelated overture-concerto-symphony concerts.
Natassja Menezes's insight:

"Not every concert needs to be thematic, but a fair sprinkling of such programs could certainly enliven a Dallas Symphony season. They might even make concerts easier to sell.
And just imagine the conversations at intermissions and afterward. Anything that gets people talking about orchestra concerts is a good thing."

How to read music - Tim Hansen

How to read music - Tim Hansen | Classical Music Audience-Building | Scoop.it
Like an actor’s script, a sheet of music instructs a musician on what to play (the pitch) and when to play it (the rhythm). Sheet music may look complicated, but once you've gotten the hang of a few simple elements like notes, bars and clefs, you're ready to rock. Tim Hansen hits the instrumental basics you need to read music.

Cast of homeless people wows opera lovers during two-week residency in Covent Garden

Cast of homeless people wows opera lovers during two-week residency in Covent Garden | Classical Music Audience-Building | Scoop.it
Sir George Young, the Tory MP who once said the homeless were "the people you step over coming out of the Opera House", could not have been more wrong.
Natassja Menezes's insight:

"Members of the Streetwise Opera charity have performed beside long-term unemployed Londoners, students from the Central School of Speech and Drama, and ex-prisoners from the Synergy Theatre Project during a two-week residency at Covent Garden... According to Mr Peacock, simply engaging with a new activity can help people who have been homeless restore their dignity and purpose."

MODAL Research Group | Multimodal Opportunities and Diversity in Artistic Learning Research at SFU

| Multimodal Opportunities and Diversity in Artistic Learning Research at SFU
Natassja Menezes's insight:

"MODAL Research Group began in 2008 as Research for Youth, Music and Education (RYME). Our research still includes a strong focus on youth and music, particularly as music relates to young people’s everyday lives. Many young people who participated in our past research told us about their engagement with music in ways that are increasingly multimodal (involving different modes of expression that include elements from visual arts, language arts, dance, and drama) as well as digital media technologies. We have therefore expanded our research to focus on a comprehensive and systematic study of artistic learning and the multiple pathways through which youth are engaged in and through the arts, particularly in relation to youth-led initiatives and digital media."

Orchestral manoeuvres in the car park

Orchestral manoeuvres in the car park | Classical Music Audience-Building | Scoop.it
Level seven of a multi-storey car park in southeast London isn't where you'd expect to hear Sibelius's Fifth Symphony. Nonetheless, that's where the Multi-Story orchestra are performing. Founders Kate Whitley and Christopher Stark explain how it works
Natassja Menezes's insight:

"Tonight, Friday 20 June, we are bringing together a 65-piece classical symphony orchestra in a disused multi-storey car park in Peckham Rye, London... By escaping the spaces that classical music normally inhabits it becomes possible to escape from its traditional associations, and potentially attract audiences who might find those associations - but not the music - alienating."

Natassja Menezes's insight:

"It follows the industry’s favourite communicative norm: conceived by people who already love the art form forpeople who already love the art form.... Arts education and artistic relevance – not marketing – will ensure opera thrives in this country in the future (things look pretty good for the latter, not so much for the former). But in the meantime, our state-subsidised orchestras and opera companies must start telling the public that they have the capacity to move, scare and pin them to their seats whatever their current level of understanding"

What we do is solid classical music repertoire, and we wouldn't dare compromise the quality of the music itself. Instead, where we feel that the repertoire allows, we try to explore and introduce little elements that would not be your usual encounters at a classical concert performance.
