This is a very good article from the American Optometric Association reviewing the top 6 Rookie mistakes with contact lens care.  Below is a summary:

  1. Overstayed welcome: About half of patients use their contact lenses longer than the approved schedule.  Contact lenses are designed to be worn according to their approved schedule.  Many patients wear contact lenses until the start to bother them.  This is a top Rookie mistake! You're risking your eye care to save a few bucks.  It isn't worth it.

  2. Caught dirty-handed. Be sure to wash your hands before handling your contact lenses.  Eye infections are frequently caused by dirty hands

  3. Damp digits. Make sure you dry your hands before handling your contact lenses.  Water has microorganisms in it and can transfer the harmful bugs to your contact lenses and your eyes.

  4. No respect for the system. "The cheapest solution isn't always the best solution," Dr. Quinn says. Bottom line is, use the contact lens treatment system that is recommended by your doctor and the contact lens manufacturer.

  5. A case of grimy cases. The AOA recommends wearers replace lens cases at least every three months, and cases should be cleaned and disinfected periodically in between. If you have questions about appropriate contact lens case care, please ask our doctors or staff.

  6. Dozing dangers. Sleeping in contact lenses that are not designed for sleep has a very high rate of eye infections.  Only sleep in contact lenses that are designed for overnight wear.
