City of the Beasts (Eagle and Jaguar, #1)

City of the Beasts (Eagle and Jaguar, #1) | City of the Beasts: Brazil | Scoop.it
Fifteen-year-old Alexander Cold is about to join his fearless grandmother on the trip of a lifetime. An International Geographic expediti...
Carl's insight:

A boy, Alex, is headed to New York to live with his grandmother because his mother is receiving treatment for her cancer in Texas. When Alex arrives in New York it is a struggle to find Kate's (his grandmother) house because she didn't pick him up at the airport. When he finds her house and he finally settles in, she informs him that they are taking a trip to the Amazon. When they arrive to the Amazon, she tells Alex that they are looking for an animal that they call the Beast. Nobody has ever seen it and they are trying to conquer that on this trip. They have to walk everywhere they go. No rivers big enough for boats anymore and there are to many trees to take a helicopter to their desired destination. One of the first few nights they encountered the Beast because somebody was missing from their campsite and there was a stench much like a skunk that it gave off. Since that incident occurred, people took turns on lookout. When is was Alex's and Nadia's turn to lookout, they sensed the presence of Indians but couldn't see them. They went to explore to see if they could find The People of Mist but before they could see or find them, they got captured by them. They started asking questions like Kate wanted answered but they wouldn't get an answer. Instead the Indians show them the place where the Beasts live. Walimai, the head Indian told Alex and Nadia that there where three mysterious eggs and a fountain of youth. In order to receive such gifts, they would have to find them on their own and give up something in return for those gifts. When Nadia found her three eggs, she had to give up her necklace. When Alex found the water, he had to give up his flute. If they didn't return at the end of the day, they lost their precious gifts. When they returned to camp, Kate slapped Alex because of how worried she was that he was dead but made up for it. Nadia's father gave her a huge hug and wanted to know the who, what, where, and how of their expedition. Neither could tell for the sake of the People of Mist. In the end we never know if Alex brings the water to his mother to cure her or what Nadia does with the three eggs that are actually a type of diamond.

River Monsters - Muscular Amazon Catfish

Carl's insight:

There is plenty of fish to find in the Amazon. Catching these big fish are so incredibly hard to do even with a rod as well as Jeremy has. It amazes me how big fish can get. In this case, the catfish adapted to its environment and that is why these are so big in this particular area of the Amazon.

River Monsters: The Mouth of Madness

More Monsters: http://animal.discovery.com/videos/river-monsters-africas-strangest/#mkcpgn=ytapl1 After a struggle, Jeremy Wade reels in a massive red-bellie...
Carl's insight:

Jeremy Wade catches a lot of fish and discovers different types all of the time. In this case he caught a pacu fish. The story behind this fish is that when some people go to bathe in the river, this fish is known to do a lot of damage to you if you get bitten. They have teeth like a human used for grinding and that is why this fish is so dangerous. If you ever have watched his tv show, I would like to see all of these fish up close but not like he does where he puts himself in danger.

Lost tribes of the Amazon

Lost tribes of the Amazon | City of the Beasts: Brazil | Scoop.it
Carl's insight:

These explorers were on a journey to find an "uncontacted tribe." Their mission was to find these Indians and protect them from the government. Miners, loggers, and settlers got in their way every time and their plan was to change they way they went about finding these tribes. They set themselves up high and one of their goals was to use a high tech camera and find them digitally. Since the government didn't care, somebody else had to do the job. These explorers believe that the government should treat these Indians just like any other person in civilization. When explorers have gone on journeys trying to find Indians, they too have gotten lost and some never found their way back and were lost forever.

Taking the Amazon out of its gilded cage for its inhabitants

Taking the Amazon out of its gilded cage for its inhabitants | City of the Beasts: Brazil | Scoop.it
Carl's insight:

This article suggests that the people who live in the rainforest are the only hope of conservation. These adventurers want to destroy the Amazon for its contents that lay in the rainforest. With these people not having any money because of their place in society, indigenous tribes and animals won't have a home and they will eventually die. Those people living in the Amazon have no say in society as to what they do with the rainforest. Brazil is spending $2 billion dollars to build a highway (1960s). They are doing that to connect Brazil and Peru. Many trees will be destroyed in that process which means the animals and people living there lose protection and possibly food. These people wanting to build a highway don't understand that these people are stable in their environment just like we are in our own country.

Carl's insight:

You don't really need to read the first book in the series to get to know this book. The same characters, Alex, Kate, and Nadia, are at it again. This time they are on a trip to the Himalayas to locate the Golden Dragon. On the adventure a monk, his disciple, and a group of Yeti warriors will be helping Alex and Kate on this adventure. This book sounds interesting because it is written in a different part of the world. Their adventure sounds just as exciting as in City of the Beasts.

Brazil

Brazil | City of the Beasts: Brazil | Scoop.it
Carl's insight:

The Amazon covers about forty percent of Brazil and it contains the longest river. The Amazon is always hot and humid and receives a lot of rain annually. There are plenty of animals and plants living in the Amazon but that number is going down because of deforestation. There have been laws that are trying to get passed protecting land of the Amazon from farmers. People in Brazil are often called "hunter-gatherers." The people in the Amazon fish almost everyday for a source of food. People were also discovering diamonds and gold. That only meant that more and more people were going to move to Brazil to find such things and that also involves destroying part of the rainforest. Healthcare has gone down in Brazil but organizations have turned that around to get people the correct attention.

Wild Amazon Part 1

Dear All - new uploads from today onwards on http://www.youtube.com/user/batuchkat
Carl's insight:

The biggest cat in all of the Americas is the jaguar. Jaguars kill with a single bite to the back of the head. Creatures adapt to the environment and if they don't, one of the biggest ways of death is drowning due to the great amount of precipitation the Amazon receives. Even trees have adapted to the amount of rainfall that the forest receives. Some fish find food by jumping as high as 2 meters out of the water. For protection, animals and plants have spikes on their body and some have poison on themselves too. The most successful animal in the Amazon are the insects, especially ants. Many creatures remain a mystery because they live so high up in the trees, scientists can't discover them.

Black Jaguar

Black Jaguar | City of the Beasts: Brazil | Scoop.it
Carl's insight:

Black Jaguar Foundation is a foundation that helps protect black jaguars. Simple as that. Deforestation has been a big contributor to killing the black jaguars. Black Jaguar Foundation estimated that there are only 600 black jaguars left and that number keeps going down. The basic goal of the Black Jaguar Foundation is to restore the natural habitat of the jaguar as well as other species of animals becoming extinct. If you donate to this foundation there are so many things that you can do. One is that you can receive a handcrafted jaguar sculpture. A second is that you can receive a personalized poster and thirdly, you have a chance to win a fully paid trip to the Amazon. A big reason why they chose the black jaguar is because of their place in the food chain. Since they are so high up, they need to keep the balance of the animals that are lower in the food chain.

This map shows where the Amazon is in the country of Brazil. If you would like to visit the Amazon where there is a beautiful jungle. There are places where there isn't a jungle and you could also visit those places. Those places are where loggers and other people have cut down trees.
