We live in the Citizens United Era. The period of time since the Supreme Court’s Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission decision.
In Citizens United (2010), the Court held that private corporations, which are not mentioned in the Constitution, enjoy the same political free speech rights as people under the First Amendment and may draw on the wealth of their treasuries to spend unlimited sums of money promoting, disparaging or corrupting candidates for public office.
From the beginning, runaway corporatist ideology and the plutocratic rule of moneyed interests have been subverting our democracy to fit their design. In the process we loose freedom and liberty, our government becomes corrupted by doing their biding, our legal, financial and banking systems become their pawns, our environment gets trashed, our corporate media publishes and broadcasts their propaganda and the American way of life vanishes.
All of these issues have real world consequences. We may not realize that now, but we must take action to educate ourselves and create an “informed citizenry”, so we can help with the crucial work of reversing these trends and restoring an active and engaged democracy. That is what, I hope, this magazine helps to do.
Towards that goal, I curate stories, from many Internet sources. These stories are relevant to our struggle and the Citizens United Era in which we live and want to end.
I hope you will come to this sight often and educate yourselves. Then encourage others to do the same.
We must fight back, It is our future! If not us, who? If not now, when?

In 2010, Bank of America set up more than 200 subsidiaries in the Cayman Islands (which has a corporate tax rate of 0.0 percent) to avoid paying U.S. taxes. It worked. Not only did Bank of America pay nothing in federal income taxes, but it received a rebate from the IRS worth $1.9 billion that year. They are not alone. In 2010, JP Morgan Chase operated 83 subsidiaries incorporated in offshore tax havens to avoid paying some $4.9 billion in U.S. taxes. That same year Goldman Sachs operated 39 subsidiaries in offshore tax havens to avoid an estimated $3.3 billion in U.S. taxes. Citigroup has paid no federal income taxes for the last four years after receiving a total of $2.5 trillion in financial assistance from the Federal Reserve during the financial crisis. On and on it goes. Wall Street banks and large companies love America when they need corporate welfare. But when it comes to paying American taxes or American wages, they want nothing to do with this country. That has got to change.
February 6, 2013 ALTERNET A new report shows that states lose out big time when the wealthy avoid paying their fair share. According to a new report by U.S. PIRG Education Fund corporations accounted for more than $26 billion of lost revenue in 2011 alone, while wealthy individuals are responsible for the rest. The blow to states rests on top of nearly $150 billion of lost annual federal revenue due to corporate loopholes. In a statement, PIRG said everyday Americans bear the burden when the nation’s wealthiest elites avoid paying their fair share....

Want to be a US ambassador? Easy – if you have the cash. Like previous US presidents, Obama has awarded many of his top donors who made campaign donations of more than $500,000 with ambassador positions in the most beautiful countries. Researchers Johannes W. Fedderke and Dennis C. Jett, both professors at Pennsylvania State University, have found that about 30 percent of diplomatic posts were appointed by the president and that political ambassadors who made campaign donations of $550,000 or bundled contributions of $750,000 had a 90 percent chance of being posted to a safe and robust country in Western Europe.

In 1981, US President Ronald Reagan came to office famously declaring that, “Government is not the solution to our problem. Government is the problem.” Thirty-two years and four presidents later, Barack Obama’s recent inaugural address, with its ringing endorsement of a larger role for government in addressing America’s – and the world’s – most urgent challenges, looks like it may bring down the curtain on that era.

On Tuesday, House Progressives offered the first and only deficit reduction plan to come out of Congress so far in 2013 that would create jobs and avoid the budget sequester. It would: Maintain the $1.7 trillion in spending cuts created by the 2011 Budget Control Act's spending caps;Maintain the more than $700 billion in revenues generated by the tax cliff deal at the end of the last Congress;Replace the nearly $1 trillion sequester with new revenue generated by closing loopholes and deductions; andCut defense spending by nearly $300 billion, which would then be spent on creating jobs by investing in our infrastructure.

Well the nation’s favorite political sugar daddy advocates are at it again. That’s right, Citizens United, the group that brought you unlimited, unaccountable campaign spending, is back, bigger, badder and uncut. This time around they’re pouring their legal resources and unlimited funds into giving full-throated support for the Defense of Marriage Act. And oh, but how!

The Republic is at war against an adaptive foe that seeks its destruction. Not al Qaeda, which might no longer exist in meaning form, but internal foes seeking its overthrow. That they’re moving incrementally, small steps slowly growing larger with each success, only masks the boldness of their goals. It’s the quiet coup. Here we look at the latest chapter in the war, the most recent rip torn in the Constitution.
