Cisco Security Advisory: OpenSSL Heartbeat Extension Vulnerability in Multiple Cisco Products

Cisco Security Advisory: OpenSSL Heartbeat Extension Vulnerability in Multiple Cisco Products | Cisco Learning | Scoop.it
Multiple Cisco products incorporate a version of the OpenSSL package affected by a vulnerability that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to retrieve memory in chunks of 64 kilobytes from a connected client or server.

The vulnerability is due to a missing bounds check in the handling of the Transport Layer Security (TLS) heartbeat extension. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by implementing a malicious TLS or Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS) client, if trying to exploit the vulnerability on an affected server, or a malicious TLS or DTLS server, if trying to exploit the vulnerability on an affected client. An exploit could send a specially crafted TLS or DTLS heartbeat packet to the connected client or server. An exploit could allow the attacker to disclose a limited portion of memory from a connected client or server for every heartbeat packet sent. The disclosed portions of memory could contain sensitive information that may include private keys and passwords.

Please note that the devices that are affected by this vulnerability are the devices acting as an SSL server terminating SSL connections or devices acting as an SSL Client initiating an SSL connection. Devices that are simply traversed by SSL traffic without terminating it are not affected.

This advisory will be updated as additional information becomes available. Cisco will release free software updates that address these vulnerabilities. Workarounds that mitigate these vulnerabilities may be available.

Big Picture Thinking Makes Tactics Easier

Big Picture Thinking Makes Tactics Easier | Cisco Learning | Scoop.it

What is the essence of the problem? Traditional management tools. While the conversation with IT professionals at all levels is about improving data center efficiency and responsiveness, without unified management and automation, converged infrastructures are only solving half of the problem.

Basically IT is still managing the trees instead of the forest.

Giovanni Perteghella's insight:

Cisco UCS Director is a vital companion to the Vblock data center architecture because it simplifies provisioning and management of physical and virtual resources. Cisco UCS Director lets you manage your entire standardized Vblock environment as a single entity, delivering operational efficiency and reducing costs.

IPv6 Address Planning: Guidelines for IPv6 address allocation

IPv6 Address Planning: Guidelines for IPv6 address allocation | Cisco Learning | Scoop.it
Giovanni Perteghella's insight:

IP address planning is certainly among the critical functions required within the overall process of planning and executing an IPv6 deployment project. After all, one needs IPv6 address space in order to implement IPv6 and current IPv4 space must be managed in conjunction with the addition of IPv6 space. But the overall IPv6 deployment process requires not only IPv6 address space but an assurance that network and computing infrastructure is capable of processing and supporting IPv6 address space.

Cisco Security Advisory: Cisco IOS Software DHCP Denial of Service Vulnerability

A vulnerability in the DHCP implementation of Cisco IOS Software and Cisco IOS XE Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS) condition.
Giovanni Perteghella's insight:

Cisco devices that are running affected Cisco IOS Software or Cisco IOS XE Software with the DHCP server or DHCP relay feature enabled are vulnerable. The DHCP server or DHCP relay feature is not enabled by default. Cisco devices that are configured as DHCP clients are not affected by this vulnerability.

To determine whether a Cisco IOS device or Cisco IOS XE device is configured as a DHCP server, issue the following command :

- show ip dhcp pool

- show run | include helper-address

ZMap · The Internet Scanner

Giovanni Perteghella's insight:

ZMap is an open-source network scanner that enables researchers to easily perform Internet-wide network studies. With a single machine and a well provisioned network uplink, ZMap is capable of performing a complete scan of the IPv4 address space in under 45 minutes, approaching the theoretical limit of gigabit Ethernet.

ZMap can be used to study protocol adoption over time, monitor service availability, and help us better understand large systems distributed across the Internet.

Countermeasures for malicious use of IPv6 Type 0 Routing Headers

Countermeasures for malicious use of IPv6 Type 0 Routing Headers | Cisco Learning | Scoop.it
Giovanni Perteghella's insight:

Attackers can maliciously use IPv6 Type 0 Routing headers to bypass packet filters (IPv6 access-list policies) or anycast addressing and routing. These headers can also be used to perform reflected denial of service (DoS) attacks, spoofing, double spoofing, and amplification attacks (ping-pong attacks that can cause link saturation and potential performance issues through added CPU processing).

The Seagate Kinetic Open Storage Vision

The Seagate Kinetic Open Storage Vision | Cisco Learning | Scoop.it

The Seagate® Kinetic Open Storage platform is a new class of key/value Ethernet drives plus developers tools and APIs for software-defined, object-oriented, scale-out approaches to data center architecture.

Giovanni Perteghella's insight:

The World of Storage Has Changed: Data Types, Access Models, Demand and Use Cases

Over the past decade, the explosive growth of large-scale, data-driven applications has begun to shift the nature of enterprise storage infrastructure fundamentally. The traditional paradigm of hardware-centric, file-based systems is moving aside to make way for new software-defined, object-based approaches.

The new paradigm is an object-oriented one: a world of pictures, movies, ecommerce and Web data, search, and games, and archives of all of these. In this world, objects (information) are written, read and deleted but never modified. Increasingly, systems and data centers are designed for capacity rather than performance. Tiering and distribution have become imperative. Analytics have become both routine and essential—on demand, in real time, across any dimension and any heat of data.

In addition, because Ethernet is the undisputed fabric of data centers and application traffic, it has unsurprisingly emerged as the backbone of storage infrastructure. This can be seen by the phenomenal growth of virtual server and desktop infrastructure, as well as the rampant adoption of Amazon Web Services to validate this latter point.

Become an SDN Expert with the Network Programmability Program

Become an SDN Expert with the Network Programmability Program | Cisco Learning | Scoop.it

New careers in IT are being built, focusing more on complex services and architectures rather than systems. With this shift, new talent needs arise for IT professionals as industry job roles evolve. Cisco is leading this shift, offering a comprehensive curriculum that will continue to expand and grow. The curriculum addresses four industry job roles that will continue to evolve. The new Architect or Network Designer will build on their foundation and enhance their skillset to be able to offer new opportunities to customers, cooperating with developers, and engineers to build new open architectures.

Giovanni Perteghella's insight:

Network Programmability Engineer : The network programmability engineer will be responsible for deploying the network applications into the programmable environment and making them operational. The engineer will receive the network application and the infrastructure design from the network programmability designer to deploy, install, and troubleshoot.

Network Programmability Designer : In an architect role, this individual will collect the customer requirements, be knowledgeable about the applications that leverage the infrastructure, and translate the customer requirements into a recommended open infrastructure. This individual will provide the functional specifications of the network applications to the network programmability developer.

Network Programmability Developer : The network programmability developer will be responsible for developing network applications in the programmable environment such as Cisco Open Network Environment (ONE). This is a new role focused on the development of the network applications layer, which can live in any of the Cisco provided programmable components, and will enable service provider, campus, and data center use cases. This individual is a software programmer able to program in Python, C, or other languages in an open networking environment.

Business Application Developer : This individual develops business applications such as for SAP and Oracle, leveraging the programmability capability of the new open network environment. This individual will also leverage API capabilities in order to collect information from the network.
