Monday, 15 October, 2012. According to reports, 17 of the 30 passengers on board a Damascus-bound Syrian plane intercepted by Turkey were intelligence officials from the Federal Security Service (FSB). Those intelligence officials were headed to Damascus to determine the identities of some 300 Chechen Russian citizens who, according to the FSB, are fighting side by side with opposition forces to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Friday, 12 October, 2012. Another round of talks ended in Geneva. According to the Foreign Minister of Abkhazia, Vyacheslav Chirikba, head of the Abkhazian delegation on negotiations, "we continued discussion of a joint project of the participants concerning peaceful resolution of current political problems". Chirikba noted that it is still a "raw" document, but its discussion will be continued on the 22nd round of talks, which will take place on 12 December.

Friday, 12 October, 2012. For the past year or so, construction on a large scale Islamic training institute has been underway in Nalchik, the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria. Nearly complete, the campus will provide dormitory and training facilities for up to 5,000 students. The facility will be one of—if not the largest—of its kind in the region and potentially in all of Russia.

About 82% of imports to Abkhazia come from the Russian Federation, but Turkey receives about 36% of Abkhazia’s exports. As trade relations between the two countries evolve, so, too, might their formal policy relations.

According to the Georgian Foreign Ministry, the talks will be attended by representatives from Georgia, Russia, the U.S., South Ossetia and Abkhazia, as well as the UN, OSCE and the EU.

The Public Chamber of Kabardino-Balkaria—a local civic organization—called on the republic’s authorities to actively cooperate with local Circassian and ethnic minority youths. The call is an attempt to reduce the number of local youth who turn to hooliganism, violence or extremism. While many argue that youth need more economic opportunities, the Chamber called for greater moral education and social programs.

Wednesday, 10 October, 2012. Representatives of the "Georgian Dream" Giorgi Volski and Paata Zakareishvili will attend the next round of Geneva talks. As Volski told journalists before his departure to Geneva, the current round will be the 21st, but no results have been seen. The Georgian delegation is headed by Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergi Kapanadze. Representatives of the "Georgian Dream" participate at the meeting only as observers.

The cost of traveling to Hajj will be covered by a local charitable fund named after Ahmad Kadyrov. The fund is expected to finance an additional 1,000 more Hajj pilgrims from the surrounding region.

Security forces in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria say a police officer and two suspected militants have been killed in a special operation in the capital, Nalchik. The two militants barricaded themselves inside an apartment block after police tried to detain them. Officials say the militants opened fire on police, severely wounding one officer, who later died in hospital.

"No additional Defense Forces in the North Caucasus have been deployed," said NAC officials. Thursday, 11 October, 2012. An F16 Turkish Air Force fighter jet intercepted a Russian Airbus A320 commercial passenger jet en route from Moscow to Damascus. Turkey forced the Russian aircraft to make an emergency landing in Ankara on suspicion that the plane was carrying cargo “of a military nature”. Following its arrival, Turkish authorities seized 12 cargo containers and allowed the plane to continue on to Damascus.

Thursday, 11 October, 2012. The United States has sent troops to Jordan to bolster its military capabilities in the event Syria's civil war escalates. The troops have moved back and forth to the Syrian border as part of their work. News of the U.S. mission to Jordan also follows several days of shelling between Turkey and Syria, an indication that the civil war could become a regional conflict. Turkey's military chief vowed Wednesday to respond with more force to any further shelling from Syria.

With Syria’s civil strife coursing through major cities and unsettling neighboring countries, the Turkish military sounded a somber warning on Wednesday that it may respond more forcefully after days of shelling from Syria. As fighting near segments of the 550-mile border has unfolded over the past week, several mortar bombs have landed on Turkish soil, prompting Turkish gunners to return fire. It has not been clear whether the Syrian mortar is deliberate or the result of inaccurate fire in clashes between government forces and rebel.

Wednesday, 10 October, 2012. Out of 500 Circassians who arrived in Kabardino-Balkaria from Syria, 80 have found a safe haven in this city. Adygeya, has provided shelter for 200 more Syrians and a few thousand more are still waiting in Syria for their permit to come. But the refugee quotas for 2012 are already exhausted for the North Caucasus. You can see Syrians on the streets, in the parks, in the local mosque or at the marketplace. They are always friendly and hospitable, a bit embarrassed by their idle lifestyle here – and have trouble getting used to the mountains and there being so many trees around.
