Tired of the Boring Old Three Point Lighting? An Alternative Setup To The Rescue - BigLeagueFilmSchool | Cinematography | Scoop.it
Three Point Lighting may not be the best technique for your portrait or interview shoot. Learn an alternative method that is killer!
Christophe LARUE's insight:

The best cinematographers don’t follow a formula. They trust their eye and rely on years of “rules” which they followed long enough until it was time to break them.

Know Your WaveForm! RGB vs. Luma in the Field

Know Your WaveForm! RGB vs. Luma in the Field | Cinematography | Scoop.it
Christophe LARUE's insight:

Proper exposure in HD is not always easy. Meter readings don’t always match what the camera sees. Zebras tell us where highlights are clipped but that’s about it. False color gives us broad stroke references… but the most useful tool overall is the waveform monitor. The problem is that there are two kinds: both are extremely useful, but for completely different things.

Christophe LARUE's insight:

Christopher Doyle was born in Australia, but after years of roaming, he finally settled in Hong Kong, and his work as a cinematographer there helped to define the beautiful formalism of contemporary Asian cinema. He is best known for his collaboration with Wong Kar-Wai, for whom he shot 7 films including Chungking Express, Happy Together, 2046 and the sublime In the Mood for Love, a reference for many students of cinema.

A Masterclass in Handheld Camera Operating from 'Place Beyond The Pines' DP Sean Bobbitt « No Film School | Cinematography | Scoop.it

At last month’s Cameraimage festival in Poland, Bobbitt conducted a truly excellent hour and a half workshop about handheld camera operating.

Christophe LARUE's insight:

These days, there aren’t many DPs doing more inspired work than Sean Bobbitt. From his absolutely stunning collaborations with British artist Steve McQueen (of which 12 Years A Slave is the most recent), to his work with masterful filmmakers like Derek Cianfrance and Neil Jordan, Bobbitt has defined one of the most unique and compelling cinematic voices in recent memory.

TOP CINEMATOGRAPHERS REVEAL THEIR FAVOURITE MOVIE MOMENTS

TOP CINEMATOGRAPHERS REVEAL THEIR FAVOURITE MOVIE MOMENTS | Cinematography | Scoop.it
22 Mar 2014: In depth looks at all the movies that matter as well as quizzes, fun and games from the world's leading film magazine.
Christophe LARUE's insight:

Cinematographers – or 'directors of photography', if you're not into the whole brevity thing – have been the unsung heroes of cinema since the year dot. If the writer is a movie's synapses and the director is its heart, the DP is the eyes. Manipulating light, depth and perspective to elevate even the most simple stories into things of beauty, they are often filmmaking's unsung heroes. Gregg Toland, Freddie Young, Jack Cardiff, Vittorio Storaro, Conrad Hall, Jordan Cronenweth, Christopher Doyle, Roger Deakins… the roll call of greats is glorious. To celebrate their achievements and demystify their work, Film Studies 101 asked 21 of cinema's top DPs to pick a moment in the history of the art that has inspired and moved them. Empire is proud to share their selections with you.
