Three Amazing Resources For History Teachers That Students Will Love | ciberpocket | Scoop.it
In this post Kirsten shares three great resources for history teachers they can use in the classroom to immerse their students in ancient cultures and WWI.

«in this article I’d like to point you to some projects and websites to use in class, either to prepare for a trip abroad or to have the possibility of exploring when going abroad is not possible. So I took a closer look at some of the sources the New York Times mentioned in its article about digital humanities»

How Renaissance People Think

How Renaissance People Think | ciberpocket | Scoop.it
Do you think like a polymath? Here’s a quick test:
Are you more of a rational or intuitive thinker?
If you cringed as you read the question and thought to yourself “I love constantly shifting between both modes of thought,” then you’re on the polymath path.

Good. I just downloaded a few vids that I want to hold on to. I was using this site for about a month http://online-audio-converter.com/ but then one day YouTube and Vimeo were gone!
Steve Covello's comment, Today, 10:21 AM
I have been using savetube.com and keepvid.com (seems to be having 500 Server Error troubles at the moment), but the interface for each is deceptive. Sending a "fawn" into this area would likely end up causing unwanted downloads.

Documentary Shadows Of Liberty

Shadows of Liberty reveals the extraordinary truth behind the news media: censorship, cover-ups and corporate control.

Filmmaker Jean-Philippe Tremblay takes a journey through the darker corridors of the US media, where global conglomerates call the shots. For decades, their overwhelming influence has distorted news journalism and compromised its values.

In highly revealing stories, renowned journalists, activists and academics give insider accounts of a broken media system. Controversial news reports are suppressed, people are censored for speaking out, and lives are shattered as the arena for public expression is turned into a private profit zone.

Tracing the story of media manipulation through the years, Shadows of Liberty poses a crucial question: why have we let a handful of powerful corporations write the news? We're left in no doubt - media reform is urgent and freedom of the press is fundamental.

Seeing Art Through Jane Austen’s Eyes

Seeing Art Through Jane Austen’s Eyes | ciberpocket | Scoop.it

On May 24, 1813, Jane Austen went to a crowded art gallery on Pall Mall in London, looking for Mrs. Darcy.

“I dare say Mrs. D. will be in yellow,” Austen wrote that morning to her sister, referring to the romantic heroine whose happy ending she had sketched out in “Pride and Prejudice,” published four months earlier.

Online porn: the facts and the fantasy

Online porn: the facts and the fantasy | ciberpocket | Scoop.it
Yes, the majority of teenagers will almost certainly watch porn; they may also have underage sex, take stupid drugs and drink until they can't see. Then, at some point, they'll fall in love and realise the world is a dark and unforgiving place in which the frenzied absurdity of pornography holds absolutely no relevance. And then they're us. And suddenly, it's a whole lot less frightening

Robert Darnton: Great Cat Massacre and Other Episodes in French Cultural History (1985-)

Robert Darnton: Great Cat Massacre and Other Episodes in French Cultural History (1985-) | ciberpocket | Scoop.it

When the apprentices of a Paris printing shop in the 1730s held a series of mock trials and then hanged all the cats they could lay their hands on, why did they find it so hilariously funny that they choked with laughter when they reenacted it in pantomime some twenty times? Why in the eighteenth-century version of Little Red Riding Hood did the wolf eat the child at the end? What did the anonymous townsman of Montpelier have in mind when he kept an exhaustive dossier on all the activities of his native city? These are some of the provocative questions Robert Darnton answers in this classic work of European history in what we like to call “The Age of Enlightenment.”

"Exit, Voice, and Loyalty" by Albert O. Hirschman

Professor Hirschman wrote this book while in residence at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University.

Hirschman was interested in contrasting the two strategies that people have for dealing with badly performing organizations and institutions. “Exit” is voting with your feet, expressing your displeasure by taking your business elsewhere. “Voice” is staying put and speaking up, choosing to fight for reform from within. There is no denying where his heart lay.

The implications of the above concept can be enormous and can allow for a new perspective on daily examples of social interaction. Exit and voice themselves represent a union between economical and political action. Exit is associated with Adam Smith's invisible hand, in which buyers and sellers are free to move silently through the market, constantly forming and destroying relationships. Voice, on the other hand, is by nature political and at times confrontational.
