When Someone Really Listens, We Heal

When Someone Really Listens, We Heal | Christian Counseling | Scoop.it

Sharing our deepest feelings with a trusted individual can be a healing experience, especially for those experiencing depression. Never underestimate the power of talking with someone who really listens.

Our culture doesn’t encourage people to

talk about their emotional pain.

Our culture teaches people to suppress their feelings. People tell each other not to “whine” about problems or not to “dwell” on them. People are told to “get over it” and to “be strong,” meaning “don’t feel anything—and if you do, don’t talk about it or show it.”

It is hard for doctors to be good listeners. We all want to feel that we have been heard.

The Signs of a Leader's Empathy Deficit Disorder

The Signs of a Leader's Empathy Deficit Disorder | Christian Counseling | Scoop.it

When attention flows along power lines, empathy also takes a hit. When strangers told each other about divorces or other painful moments in their lives, there was more empathy expressed by the less powerful person.

Another measure of empathy – the accuracy with which we can tell a person’s feelings from clues like facial expression – also turns out to differ, with lower status people more skilled than those of higher positions.

This fact of social life poses a danger for leaders – after all, the most effective leaders are outstanding at abilities that build on empathy, like persuasion and influence, motivating and listening, teamwork and collaboration.

How a simple conversation can help stop schoolyard bullying

No two children are alike, and when you throw a bunch of very different individuals into a social setting, like the playground, you are bound to have problems. Young children may get bullied or start bullying others, and they may not fully understand what’s happening. Here are some talking points to discuss with your own children to help them understand the other's point of view.

1. Ask “How Did He Feel?..
2. Ask “How Did It Make You Feel?”..

3. Ask “Who Could Use a Friend?”...

Training brain patterns of empathy using functional brain imaging

Training brain patterns of empathy using functional brain imaging | Christian Counseling | Scoop.it

An unprecedented research conducted by a group of neuroscientists has demonstrated for the first time that it is possible to train brain patterns associated with empathic feelings – more specifically, tenderness.

The research showed that volunteers who received neurofeedback about their own brain activity patterns whilst being scanned inside a functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) machine were able to change brain network function of areas related to tenderness and affection felt toward loved ones.

it was demonstrated that those who received

a "real" feedback were able to "train" specific

brain areas related to the experience

of affiliative emotions that

are key for empathy.

Daniel Goleman on Focus: The Secret to High Performance and Fulfilment - YouTube

Daniel Goleman on Focus: The Secret to High Performance and Fulfilment - YouTube | Christian Counseling | Scoop.it

Psychologist Daniel Goleman shot to fame with his groundbreaking bestseller Emotional Intelligence.

The premise of the book, now widely accepted, is that raw intelligence alone is not a sure predictor of success in life.

A greater role is played by 'softer' skills such as self-control, self-motivation, empathy and good interpersonal relationships.

Relational aggression-withholding friendship as a weapon-is seen in children as young as 2½

Relational aggression-withholding friendship as a weapon-is seen in children as young as 2½ | Christian Counseling | Scoop.it

Children, especially girls, who are still in kindergarten or even younger form cliques and withhold friendship as a weapon. New programs aim to teach empathy.

Special programs are popping up in elementary schools to teach empathy as a means of stemming relational aggression, a psychological term to describe using the threat of removing friendship as a tactical weapon.

Children also are being guided in ways to stand up for themselves, and to help others, in instances of social exclusion. Though both boys and girls exhibit relational aggression, it is thought to be more common among girls because they are generally more socially developed and verbal than boys.
