The Sahel African Transition zone is between the Sahara Desert and Sudan savannah.  It has a semi arid climte and located between the Atlantic and Red Sea.  It includes Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Algeria, Niger, Chad, Sudan ,Eritrea.

Desertification is due to over farming, over grazing, overpopulation and as a result there is soil erosion, dust and sand storms, famine,d isease, and starvation.

There are areas with political and violent conflict.  Increased food prices and international aid are occurring.

Rain in the area is due to tropical convectio, West African monsoon (June) and in El Nino warms Pacific Ocean.

Chad, Cameroon, Niger, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Maliare featured in this interactive map.

(North Mali is self proclaimed Azawai) and Mali is politically unstable.  Starvation and displacement is occurring.
