Russia-China Gas Pipeline Through Protected Altai Mountains in Siberia --NTDTV.org

A natural gas pipeline from Northern Siberia to China. Russian gas giant Gazprom wants to build it, but there’s a problem--the pipeline runs through an area rich in archaeological artifacts. In fact, 27 have been found here on the Ukok plateau.

Russia and China: Cementing ties

Russia and China: Cementing ties | Chris' Regional Geography | Scoop.it

17 Spectacular Pictures of Siberia's Altai Mountains

17 Spectacular Pictures of Siberia's Altai Mountains | Chris' Regional Geography | Scoop.it

The steppe region of the Ukok Plateau is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has had many glacial periods.  The melting permafrost is exposing many ancient burial sites 2500 years old (and even older) that archaeologists were excavating burial sites and exhumig bodies preserved by the ice - this has stopped since UNESCO preserved this area.   These are some photos of the area in Siberia.   The endangered snow leopard is also in this region

chris tobin's insight:

UNESCO World Heritage Site     steppe Ukok Plateau in Siberia near the Mongolan border      Ancient burial grounds over 2500 years old    ( Hopefully Mr. Putin will not put a pipeline through it)   Many locals believe 'bad luck' earthquakes and the like is due to the excavating of ancient burial grounds. Also there is a NOVA special on the "Ice Maiden' that is worth watching on video PBS.  The Ukok Princess (as she is referred) has been put under glass preserved at a museum for all to see (sad) - the locals want her put back in her burial site.
