Do Great Choreographers Have To Be Great Dancers?

Do Great Choreographers Have To Be Great Dancers? | Choreography | Scoop.it
I received a great question from a reader and I just had to share it and my response, and see what you readers think.
She asks:
I just started taking dance seriously last year but I’ve always choreographed.

Via Susan Davis Cushing
Elena Cleaves's insight:

This is someting I've struggled with for awhile. I'm a decent dancer, and I know all the technicalities, but I'm not a classically-trained-since-I-was-2 dancer. I'm not amazing. Does that hinder my chances of being the choreographer I want to be?

GONE? HARDLY: KC Ballet presents world premiere by edge-cutting choreographer | KC Independent

You’d be hard-pressed to find an American artist in any field as interesting as Karole Armitage. She grew up partly in Lawrence, learned classical ballet initially and absorbed the work of George Balanchine in Geneva before becoming a dancer with the legendary Merce Cunningham. Shortly after forming her own company in New York she began creating choreography for many of the world’s top companies. Known for works that blend dance, music and art, she has garnered a Tony nomination for her work on Broadway and has choreographed videos for Michael Jackson, Madonna (“Vogue”) and Merchant-Ivory films. Even the name of her company is interesting: Armitage Gone! Dance.

‘A Chance To Dance’ Facebook and TV Series

‘A Chance To Dance’ Facebook and TV Series | Choreography | Scoop.it

A new TV show called A Chance To Dance is airing on dedicated arts/culture channel Ovation and follows two prominent UK dance choreographers battling it out to launch a successful dance company in just 28 days by touring the US in search of talent.

In what Ovation claims is a first for a cable TV show, the programme is also available to view live on Facebook, for a fee of $1.99 per episode.

In addition to posting comments/updates around the content as it streams, Facebook users will also be able to access exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with the show's stars and producers. Trivia questions will also be posed, with tickets to the show's live tour awarded to the brainiest or most attentive fans.

In other Facebook entertainment news, Australian TV network Ten recently previewed the first 43-minute episode of a new major drama series – Puberty Blues– on Facebook one week before it launched on TV.

If you want to build a dance festival from scratch, the key is collaboration. When veteran Kansas City Ballet dancers Logan Pachciarz and Anthony Krutzkamp determined to create an off-season dance performance, their goals were twofold: to provide work for dancers and choreographers from various companies during the lean summer months, and to present work to Kansas City audiences that we might not normally see otherwise.

Trisha Brown’s Long Career and Last Dances | Choreography | Scoop.it

Trisha Brown, a leading choreographer for more than 50 years, will present her last two dances at the Brooklyn Academy of Music this week.

Between the ’80s and this century’s first decade her collaborators included Robert Rauschenberg and Laurie Anderson, Mikhail Baryshnikov and Simon Keenlyside. And for decades she was a superlative dancer herself, a disarmingly witty artist of exceptional coordination and dexterity.

Erin Muenks Choreography Showcase - KC Fringe Festival review by watchNwrite | KC Stage Reviews

Erin Muenks, a Kansas City choreographer, showcased some new choreography on Saturday, July 20th at the KC Ballet Bolender Center. By explicitly asking her audience to privately reflect on the previous piece during intermittent bouts of music, Erin Muenks left the audience with the only thing they usually appreciate most: their opinions. And though the teeter-totter setup of music and dance was not immediately well-received right away, the audience did eventually start to appreciate the decision. more...
