What Types Of Pain Does A Pain Clinic Treat

What Types Of Pain Does A Pain Clinic Treat | Chiropractor San Diego-Back Pain San Diego | Scoop.it
The types of pain that exist are divided into two different categories, known as nociceptive pain and neuropathic pain. The treatment options for either type of pain generally depend on the type of pain being treated. In this article, we're going to look at nociceptive pain.

About nociceptive pain

Nociceptive pain is a type of pain caused by peripheral nerve fiber stimulation, which typically only respond to stimuli that reach or exceed harmful intensity, a process known as nociception.

Nociceptive pain is the most common type of pain. It mainly applies to pain caused by tissue damage or other injuries that directly affect where the underlying nerves, which then transmit signals to the brain through the spinal cord. The response from that action is the transmission of pain signals through the nerve pathways. That is how people start feeling pain.

This type of pain is generally categorized as thermal pain (temperature), mechanical pain (through open and deep lacerations) and chemical pain (pain caused by chemical substances).

Other types of nociceptive pain are defined by pain receptors: cutaneous (skin), somatic (joints, bones) and visceral (organs).

Nociception

Nociception is the processing and encoding of harmful stimuli within the nervous system. In other words, it's the body's ability to sense pain.

As mentioned, nociception is the activity that occurs in the central and peripheral nervous systems. This activity is produced by nociceptor or pain receptor stimulation that occurs when tissue damage occurs.

When these pain receptors are triggered, they send signals along their corresponding chain of fibrous nerves to the spinal cord and then to the brain. The resultant pain signals make people feel pain in that particular part of the body.

Nociceptors often generate 'chains' of action in response to intensely and, sometimes, overstimulated stimuli. How frequent those signals occur often determine the intensity of the pain itself.

Types of nociceptive pain

Nociceptive pain is often divided into three categories: the aforementioned thermal, somatic and visceral pain. Somatic pain is further divided into two categories: deep somatic pain and superficial somatic pain.

Visceral pain originates in visceral structures like the body's organs. These structures are highly susceptible to pain caused by ischemia, inflammation and stretching.

This pain is harder to locate than thermal or somatic pain, and often originates in a distant 'difficult to treat' structure. Visceral pain typically makes people feel a 'sickening, dull or deep squeezing feeling.' It may also make people feel nausea or experiencing persistent vomiting.

Somatic pain has two types:

Deep somatic pain is pain that occurs deep within structures of the body. It often originates from nociceptor stimulation in tendons, ligaments, bones, fasciae and muscles, in addition to blood vessels. People often describe this pain as 'dull, aching or sharp pain.' Common examples include broken bones and muscle tears.

Superficial somatic pain is pain that occurs on the surface of the body or, rather, in the skin. This pain originates from nociceptor stimulation in the skin or other superficial tissue underneath the skin. This pain often feels sharp and generally originates from a well located place (like a cut). Common examples include burns and wounds.

Thermal pain can be categorized as superficial somatic pain, since it often affects the surface layer of the body (the skin). Common examples include hot and cold burns.

How To Prevent Neck Pain

How To Prevent Neck Pain | Chiropractor San Diego-Back Pain San Diego | Scoop.it
Neck pain is a common problem that affects people from all walks of life. There are a number of health facilities that offer physical therapy services that can effectively relieve this kind of pain. In most cases, it entails massaging the neck muscles to promote optimal blood circulation and relax muscles around the affected area. You might have to go for consecutive therapy sessions until the problem is completely solved. Here are some tips on how to prevent neck pain.•             Look for ways of reducing tension and stress: More often than not, this type of pain arises from tense muscles located around the shoulders. Some of the ways that you can use to reduce stress on these muscles include walking, jogging, yoga and swimming.•             Maintain right body posture: One of the factors that interview panels consider when evaluating candidates for a particular job is the body posture. Unknown to most people is the fact that bad posture can lead to back and neck pain. Hence, it is recommendable to always stand and sit upright, especially when working on your computer. Parents are advised to train their children to maintain right body posture to protect them from such complications in future.•             Workout: Physical exercises have numerous health benefits such as increased blood circulation; promoting excretion of toxins from the body through sweat; and relieving stress among other benefits. Most aerobic exercises have been proven to be effective in evenly working out muscles around the neck and shoulders hence they are capable of reducing your preference to this problem.•             Attain and Maintain Right Body Weight: Excess body weight can lead to numerous health complications such as high blood pressure, stoke and other heart complications. Based on these facts, it is recommendable to ensure that your total body weight does not exceed the recommended level. Physical exercises can help you lose those extra kilos by increasing the rate at which the body converts stored fat into energy.•             Eat Balanced Diet: Eating diet that is rich in all non-essential and essential nutrients such as vitamins, carbohydrates and proteins helps body muscles and joints to work optimally. Also, it will ensure that your body weight does not exceed the recommended level.•             Stop Smoking: Scientific studies show that smoking of cigarettes can exert massive pressure on bones and muscles in the cervical spine leading to neck pains.•             Lift Heavy Items Correctly: Wrong posture when lifting heavy objects is one of the leading causes of joint and muscle pain. One of the surest ways of lifting such items is by ensuring that your backbone is straight and your legs are apart. This helps to ensure that all muscles involved are strained evenly.•             Invest in Quality Sporting Equipments: Protect your neck when taking part in various sports by investing in the right equipments. Nowadays, you can purchase such equipments online using your credit card from the comfort of your home or office.Use these tips to protect yourself from neck pains and unnecessary muscle therapy expenses. However, it is recommendable to seek medical attention if the problem persists.
