Bordeaux takes a hit as Chinese drinkers look to Burgundy and the New World

Bordeaux takes a hit as Chinese drinkers look to Burgundy and the New World | Chine et Vins Français: Une affaire de goût en devenir | Scoop.it
France bears the brunt of the crackdown on conspicuous consumption
Marc Meynardi's insight:

Maybe some days, Bordeaux wine produceurs will understand that not only a reputation and a high prices are the sales levers. Consumers are more and more educated. Not only Bordeaux is producing good wines. But only Bordeaux area is so expensive in the world. Beeing French, I personnaly find very good that new world wines are hiting french wine producer, particularly the arrogant Bordeaux wine producers.

Australia may replace France as top exporter of wine to China

Australia may replace France as top exporter of wine to China | Chine et Vins Français: Une affaire de goût en devenir | Scoop.it
Soon after China and Australia sign their free trade agreement, Australian wine, which will get preferential treatment and potentially even zero tariffs from China, will likely see explosive growth ...
Marc Meynardi's insight:

This situation may affect middle to lower range Burgundy or Bordeau wines. For example, a 5 € bottle of above wine, delivered in CN will be sold app 300 RMB in a shop. For a very poor quality :The low range of burgundy and Bordeau wines, are using the brand name image abroad. If they are no duty and taxes for Australian wines, of course, it's easy to compete that kind of french wines.

Taiwan’s wine imports have grown by 27% per year between 2008 and 2012, and are expected to remain in double digit growth until 2017.
Marc Meynardi's insight:

20 years ago, when I started exporting wines to Taiwan, it ended with a crisis (over stock, messy market, ...) 12 year later, it grow steadly. Looks like an experienced market. Shall we expect the same for mainland China, within few years ? Probably not, due to self production, and free trade zone with Australia.

Price is major obstacle to Chinese wine exports

Price is major obstacle to Chinese wine exports | Chine et Vins Français: Une affaire de goût en devenir | Scoop.it
Marc Meynardi's insight:

Would be better to say Price vs Quality. The price on its own does'nt mean anything. To create luxury wines in China is difficult : grape, know-how and experience, all is very new. Some other countries got a longer experience. They can pretend to build an image through the price. Although a bottle at 500 USD, never taste 50 times better that a 10 USD bottle, but at least, qualtiy is very nice, fine and pleasant.
