I had the opportunity to tell my first grade teacher thank you 5 years ago. She actually had kept my first grade picture all these years. My teachers were great and school was my favorite place and I excelled there. So thanks to all the teachers that I did not get to thank. :-)

A Design Challenge to Students: Solve a Real-World Problem! ~ MindShift

A Design Challenge to Students: Solve a Real-World Problem! ~ MindShift | China Teachers | Scoop.it

by Ian Quillen

"Creating a safe recreation space for teens; protoyping a recyclable lunch tray; setting up a water delivery system to guard against urban fires; building a public awareness campaign to combat hunger. These are just a few of examples of the types of tasks students are taking on when they participate in the Design Learning Challenge, an effort to get students to figure out how to solve real-world problems in their communities.

"Combining project-based learning, with an emphasis on the arts and design thinking, this academic competition now in its third year — a partnership between the Industrial Designers Society of America, or IDSA, and the National Art Education Association, or NAEA — has more than 750 students participating this year."

I have rescooped this resource from @Rebecca White as it is a great resource for teaching the Design and technology strand and incorporates sustainability. The website focuses on design thinking, 21st century learning skills, design learning research, curriculum frameworks, project based learning and engaging today’s students. It links with the Australian Curriculum for technology including design technology as it is build student computational thinking by getting them to create and evaluate projects which aims towards creating preferred futures.

Katherine Reed's curator insight, April 7, 7:34 PM

This is the background information for competitions that are coordinated between designers and educators to promote students thinking about how to solve real world problems using design.  There are links provided to sample problems and challenges suited for Prep to Year 4 levels as well as more in depth concepts for high school students, such as designing jobs for 2050.  Interesting read and plenty of information to be explored.

Leading Motivated Learners: Social Media: Perception Builder

Leading Motivated Learners: Social Media: Perception Builder | China Teachers | Scoop.it

by Tony Sinanis

"Branding, which typically is a “business world” thing, is exactly what our schools need today! There is so much bashing of public education in the media today and the landscape of public education is not a pretty one but as educators - whether a superintendent, classroom teacher, support specialist, or the Lead Learner of the building - we still control everything that happens in our schools. And since we control what happens in our schools (even with state/federal mandates and policies, the final execution is our call) we know there are awesome techniques/approaches/etc. unfolding in our schools so let’s spread the word; let’s brand our schools; let’s fuel the perceptions; and let’s create our realities!"

The Soldiers & the Schoolteachers: An Unlikely Coalition Committed to Liberating Genius in America

The Soldiers & the Schoolteachers: An Unlikely Coalition Committed to Liberating Genius in America | China Teachers | Scoop.it
Together, as an unlikely coalition of soldiers and schoolteachers, politicians and pastors, and business leaders and bankers we can lead the change we want to see--beginning right now.

Over the past 20 years, the Internet and technology have changed the world, and the workplace, dramatically. Unfortunately, most students today receive an education substantially similar to what their parents received in the 1970s and 1980s, even as the demands of the job market today are dramatically different than what their parents encountered, and continue to morph every day.

Instead of encouraging critical and creative thinking in our children, many of our schools demand that students memorize predetermined answers, or study predetermined methods to deliver the predetermined solution.

Instead of creating opportunities to spur kids to "color outside the lines" or "think outside the box," we reward them for turning off their imaginations and toeing the line, or staying in line. No questions asked.

I haven't used a wiki lately Carl as I find Emodo, Moodle and iTunes U do the job quite nicely (at least in my current context).
carldowse's comment, September 5, 2013 7:20 AM
Ana Cristina, it all depends on the situation and the needs of the learners. For short courses or for writing skills development wikis can do a good job. For more complex courses or with larger groups, Moodle is my preferred option. An alternative to edmodo you might like to try out is https://www.schoology.com
Ana Cristina Pratas's comment, September 5, 2013 10:28 AM
In complete agreement Carl! It's the context that influences my choice of LMS. Because I find Edmodo meets my needs to have a simple & practical LMS for students, while at the same offering me the possibility to teach with it (e.g. word games, digital stories etc), I haven't had the need to set up wikis lately. I've heard very good things about schoology; from what I saw it's excellent as well. We really are spoilt by choice these days! (and yes, in complete agreement with you regarding Moodle; I like it especially for distance ed).

Melanie Faizer's curator insight, March 10, 6:57 PM

Zeega.com is a great example of storytelling through aggregating and curating, and in addition, embedded, automated attribution. It removes much of the burden of copyright. From a storytelling perspective, it has limitless possibilities, but one of the challenges is finding that story worth telling. Some Zeega examples are beautifully executed; too many are (from a journalistic perspective) one-dimensional in their execution and not thought-provoking. We are still new at curating content, and it shows. Curating is another form of narrating: the story still needs a point, a trajectory.

Courtney Burns's curator insight, December 7, 2013 4:58 PM

I think that this came out awesome! I definetly don't think that I would be able to pull something like this off. However what I found intersting about this was that it was like a cake map. Students were able to get a visual about what the earth's core is like. It visually shows them all the different layers of the earth. Just by visually seeing the cake like this will help a lot more kids to remember this lesson. Also by the baker putting the countries in their accurate locations makes this cake even that much better. They are veiwing a map and they don't even know it. I think this cake is a great tool to use to show students just how the earth is actually made up. By allowing the students to visually see it also makes it more likely for them to remember the material. Viewing maps can teach so much, which is why I think this "cake map" is an awesome way to teach and get the kids attention!
