TOPIC: UK Manufacturing & Reshoring

A brilliant short BBC video here on re-shoring. Very relevant to our China topic.

Is manufacturing in China the best solution for UK firms now with the rising cost of staff pay, distance and language/cultural barriers?

Is the brand value of being made in Britain more valuable? Or the flexibility, proximity and shorter lead times available from manufacturing in the UK?

Excellent article from the BBC on the Nissan plants success in Sunderland. It covers reasons why it has been successful, difficulties during the recession, effective leadership, efficiency and careful product portfolio management based on research (Being more market-led - Producing what the market wants you to produce based on research). It also discusses the government influences that have payed a part such as the scrappage scheme and grants given.

In the late 90s and early 00s research found that the Sunderland plant was the most efficient car factory in Europe although Nissan does not state this anymore it is still known for its high productivity and is an essential example of UK manufacturing.

The plant will employ 400 employees, include an education and business center, and have an annual production capacity of 24,000 vehicles, approximately 5% of the net vehicles sold by JLR in the last twelve months. The new plant will augment JLR’s production capabilities, and is expected to roll-out its first locally-produced vehicle by 2016. Local production will help the automaker feed local demand at competitive prices.
