Most students are exposed in school to efforts by food and beverage companies to sell food or gain brand loyalty, despite a decline in some kinds of commercial enterprises, including in soda machine contracts, researchers reported Monday.

This insightful article from the LA Times describes how food marketing is prevalent to adolescents at school. The article links it to possibilities such as declines in public funding which the school may try to make up for with "school-based commercialism." There is an undeniable need for clearer, stricter standards on the nutritional content of food and beverages served at school, as well as outside.
