Selfish Women and Their Silly Birth Experiences - Improving Birth

Selfish Women and Their Silly Birth Experiences - Improving Birth | Childbirth with Twins | Scoop.it
It’s damaging and wrong to communicate to women that we must make a choice between ourselves and our babies, because we can’t both matter.
NPT Christy's insight:

It goes without saying that safety is always our first concern, and anyone who suggests otherwise is advancing an agenda or defensive about their own birth choices. But birth matters. Respect in birth should be a right.

Research and Studies

Research and Studies | Childbirth with Twins | Scoop.it

One of the tricky things about research conclusions is that they are sometimes contradictory. Part of the reason for this is that we're all unique individuals, and our pregnancies, babies, and bodies are unique as well. We also recognize that it empowers women to have peer-reviewed research to back up their choices. With that in mind, here are some of our favorite links to research that supports our requests for natural options in multiples pregnancy, birth, and parenting! Again, these are the studies that support AVOIDING intervention.

NPT Christy's insight:

Here, we've collected research and information to help natural-leaning, attachment parenting moms of twins or more access research and studies that may inform their choices.

A Family-Centered Cesarean: Taking Back Control of My Son's Birth - Improving Birth

A Family-Centered Cesarean: Taking Back Control of My Son's Birth - Improving Birth | Childbirth with Twins | Scoop.it
So, what happens if you are completely committed to “going natural” and things don’t work out? How do you deal with being told, “This baby is at risk. We need to deliver via cesarean”?
NPT Christy's insight:

Even with the most well-prepared, well-educated, well-nourished, and healthy mothers, unexpected things can occasionally come up. When a cesarean becomes necessary, you can still expect fair treatment, to have your dignity honored, to have a birth experience that fosters bonding and encourages breastfeeding!

Did you JUST find out it's multiples?

Did you JUST find out it's multiples? | Childbirth with Twins | Scoop.it

The first thing you’ll want to find out (other than simply how many babies are in there!) is chorionicity. Depending on when and whether an egg split, your twins may be identical or fraternal (and triplets or more may be in various combinations of identical and fraternal). Fraternal twins are always what we call di-di, or DCDA (dichorionic, diamniotic), which means they have separate sacs and separate placentas. Identical twins can be either di-di, mono-di (or MCDA – monochorionic diamniotic), or rarely mono-mono (MCMA – monochorionic monoamniotic). You can find out much more about chorionicity by reading our post, One Placenta, Two Placentas, Identical, Fraternal?.

NPT Christy's insight:

If you've just found out you are expecting multiples and want a quick, basic primer to what you need to know to ask the right questions, this is the article for you!

How does the placenta "age"?

How does the placenta "age"? | Childbirth with Twins | Scoop.it

A review of the available evidence indicates that the placenta does not undergo a true aging change during pregnancy. There is, in fact, no logical reason for believing that the placenta, which is a fetal organ, should age while the other fetal organs do not: the situation in which an individual organ ages within an organism that is not aged is one which does not occur in any biological system. The persisting belief in placental aging has been based on a confusion between morphological maturation and differentiation and aging, a failure to appreciate the functional resources of the organ, and an uncritical acceptance of the overly facile concept of “placental insufficiency” as a cause of increased perinatal mortality

NPT Christy's insight:

This GREAT article addresses issues of placenta health, growth, maturation, and aging. While it does not specifically mention twins, it dispels myths about how placentas develop, grow, and work, and might be useful for mothers dealing with "placenta aging" being mentioned as a cause for elective early birth.
