bookalicious thing Hello, my fellow readers and researchers. I want to welcome you to the first of many posts that I will be making, which will have to do with building a basic knowledge of Young Adult and Children's Literature.
Chelsea Norma Arnett's insight:

The blogger is in a Master's program which requires them to read 120 books (from picture to YA lit) by the end of the second semester in the program. This site will include reviews and insight on many of those books.

100 Young Adult Books for the Feminist Reader | Bitch Media

100 Young Adult Books for the Feminist Reader | Bitch Media | Chelsea's YA Lit Shelf | Scoop.it
Chelsea Norma Arnett's insight:

Bitch Magazine (yes, it's the name of a feminist magazine, and if the word makes you uneasy, it's sort of their point) published a list of the top 100 YA Books for the Feminist Reader. I think this list is great and I'm sad that I have not read more of them. Walk Two Moons, one of my all-time favorite reads, made the cut. However, Libba Bray's Beauty Queens is not on there (though her book A Great and Terrible Beauty is). I'm not sure when this was published, so it could be the book was not yet and/or not exposed to the editor's making the list.

Many of these books don't have a feminist theme persay, but they have strong female lead characters, some of whom do something amazing (like living life on an island all along like in Island of the Blue Dolphins), or show what it was like to be a female at a certain time in history (Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, The Book Thief).

Feminist or no, the Book Thief is a must read for all people anywhere based on its uniquness, historical value, and a book promoting the awesomeness of books. Quad threat.

Gateway 2012-2013 Final Nominees - Missouri Association of School Librarians

Gateway 2012-2013 Final Nominees - Missouri Association of School Librarians | Chelsea's YA Lit Shelf | Scoop.it
Chelsea Norma Arnett's insight:

Be sure to see my post on voting for the 2013 Gateway Award. Here is the list of books to read (and vote for!) for the March 10th vote for the Gateway Award. Nominees are selected by Missouri librarians across the state. Once the list is narrowed down to 25 books MASL publishes it and has a variety of readers including students, teachers, other school librarians, public librarians, and many others who read the list and rate the books 1-5. Once all of those books are turned in in Decemember (this list was turned in December 2011) they are selected by a committee by scores from the various readers, with a little selection on the part of the committee to make sure there is variety and at least one book to interested each reader.

This list includes everything from ghosts (Chasing Brooklyn), teen love (Rules of Attraction), zombies (Rot & Ruin), futuristic dystopias (Ship Breaker, Matched), family issues (Split, Sorta Like a Rockstar, Sea), life as a deaf teen who wants to be a rocker (Five Flavors of Dumb), and coping with the loss of a sibling (Revolution, The Sky is Everywhere). Oh and lets not forget life from the perspective of a dog (A Dog's Purpose). Oh, and also time traveling/potential hallucination due to head injury to the French Revoluion (Revolution).

You have 6 days to read at least 3! If you only read three I suggest:
Revolution
Matched
The Sky is Everywhere
Before I Fall

(okay, I couldn't limit it to three...)

The idea of a cancer support group makes Hazel Grace Lancaster roll her eyes.
Chelsea Norma Arnett's insight:

I don't get the John Green hype. He was the first winner of the Printz Award with Looking for Alaska, and while I haven't read that book, I had read Paper Towns and An Abundance of Katherines, both of which I thought were "meh." I found the books to be too nerdy-teen-boy-lusting-over-girls-ish. When The Fault in Our Stars came out I had to give it a try (gosh, people won't shut up about John Green!). However, I completely and utterly fell in love. While I have not like John Green's male protaganists, I found his writing in the female voice to be completely believable (and in my opinion more accurate, though realistically what do I know about being a nerdy teen boy?)

The Message Sex Sends in YA Lit | THE PREEMINENT ...

The Message Sex Sends in YA Lit | THE PREEMINENT ... | Chelsea's YA Lit Shelf | Scoop.it
The Message Sex Sends in YA Lit. Posted by .... I get so distracted reading any contemporary sex scene, be it YA or romance or fancy pants literature, that doesn't include mention of condoms or birth control.
Chelsea Norma Arnett's insight:

An interesting blog on the messages teens may get from sex scenes in YA lit. The blogger doesn't condone teen sex, what her beef is is with how unrealistic and irresponsible it can be sometimes. Specifically, in the book she was reading there is no mention of a condom or any other type of birth control. She argues that it only takes an extra sentence to set the example for safe sex to teen readers. Also, she seems a bit irked that the sex was unrealistically easy, where sex is often awkward, especially for first time experiences. What kind of messages are sent to teen girls about sex through the books they read? What is the responsibility of the author to mention safe sex? Of the editor, publisher, etc. to make sure books intended for a teen audience are promoting safe practicies?
