Why crowdfunding hasn't caught on in Asia - Fortune Tech

Why crowdfunding hasn't caught on in Asia - Fortune Tech | Chatty Kidz | Scoop.it

The crowdfunding industry made it clear it isn't going anywhere last year. Popular crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo made it simple for entrepreneurs to fund their creative projects by soliciting donations from the general public. With more than 600 platforms worldwide, crowdfunding has grown from a $530 million industry in 2009 to nearly $2.7 billion last year, according to a recent study by Massolution, a research firm specializing in crowdsourcing businesses.

The relatively new funding strategy -- in which entrepreneurs receive donations often in exchange for small perks or gifts -- is predicted to eclipse $5 billion in total funding in 2013, according to the study.

But not everyone has fully adopted crowdfunding. Platforms in Asia, home to more than half of the world's population, were responsible for only $33 million in funding last year—just over 1% of the total raised, according to the study. With so many entrepreneurs relying on the masses to jumpstart their projects, it's noticeable that the largest concentration of people on the globe appears to be uninterested.

Jury out on children's book apps | Chatty Kidz | Scoop.it
Children's picture book apps may delight busy parents, but educators worry about them.
Ken Taggart's insight:

An interesting article discussing the educational value of kids book apps, the kind with lots of interactive elements within each page.

Do they make a book more enjoyable for a child, or are they making normal books boring?

I don't think so - a good story will grab anyone attention.  Some kids get into them earlier than others, but they wil all eventually read.

Leading children's author Mem Fox finds it ''heartbreaking'' to see small children left alone with smartphones and tablets to entertain themselves.
Ken Taggart's insight:

Chatty Kidz has the answer to this problem; our secret sauce is the 'back & forth' interaction between the adult & child whilst reading.

Leading children's author Mem Fox says 'Emotions like empathy were only developed if adults helped children see when sad, scary or nasty things were done to characters in a book or an app'

Touch and grow for iTots: one third of under-twos have used mobile devices | Chatty Kidz | Scoop.it
Charlotte Deutsch, who will be two years old next month, has a look of pure delight as she swipes the screen of her mother's old iPhone, and finds a picture of herself.
Ken Taggart's insight:

Whether we like it or not, young kids are spending more and more time on mobile devices because parents find them useful - I know I do!   I try to ensure my kids use the devices for good (i.e. learning) & not evil (i.e. mindless games), I feel guilty if they get too much game time.

Chatty Kidz is focused on solving that exact problem - giving busy parents 30 minutes guilt free.

Toddlers Learn Language Faster Via Video When It’s Interactive: What Will The Future Of Children’s TV Programming Look Like? | Chatty Kidz | Scoop.it

Ken Taggart's insight:

We have see our kids learning better from the back&forth interactions with their grandparents from using Chatty Kidz.   Here is some research to back up our findings!

"Children are less likely to learn from videos than from live, back-and-forth responsive interactions with caring adults. Young children are not good at learning language if they're merely parked in front of screen media."

Think Before You Stretch

Think Before You Stretch | Chatty Kidz | Scoop.it
Over time we’ve seen a growing number of creators adding “stretch goals” — unofficial targets beyond a project's funding goal, with promises of new rewards or other incentives if they are reached.
Ken Taggart's insight:

I spent a lot of time documenting a large range of stretch goals for my 1st Kickstarter campaign, I had thought it would demonstrate that we have a strong & focused business plan - not just an early stage vapourware idea.     It didn't work and effectively I wasted a lot of time.    I would have been better off leaving my stretch goals off the initial project pitch & added them overtime if & when the Kickstarter campaign needed them.

Joanne Brooks's curator insight, November 16, 2013 7:17 PM
Today most startups are trying to ressegment existing markets or create new markets. How do you diagram that? What if the basis of competition in market creation is really the intersection of multiple existing markets? Or what if the markets may not exist and you are creating one? Today it's all about being visual.

There’s one key difference between kids who excel at math and those who don’t | Chatty Kidz | Scoop.it
“I’m just not a math person.” We hear it all the time. And we've had enough. Because we believe that the idea of “math people” is the most self-destructive idea in America today.
