Charlotte after the bank crisis: 'Just fine, and you?' - Term Sheet

FORTUNE -- Charlotte is a corporate town. Counting its suburbs, it's still home to eight Fortune 500 companies, thank you very much. It's still very much the country's other banking center. But to make sense of what's happened here in the past four years -- the bust, the bottom, and what comes next -- the best place to begin isn't at the junction of Trade and Tryon streets downtown (the city's Tigris and Euphrates) or even in the gleaming office parks a stone's throw from the South Carolina state line.

Preparing to host the Democratic convention, the nation's other financial hub looks beyond its wounded institutions.

Charlotte Chamber - Chobani Locates Sales Headquarters in Charlotte

Chobani Greek Yogurt, America’s #1 yogurt brand, announced at the Charlotte Chamber Board of Advisors meeting that it will locate its sales headquarters in Charlotte. The 5,200 square foot office will be located in the Charlotte Plaza building in Uptown Charlotte.

The company was born with an SBA loan, and in less than five years has grown into a $700 million business. The company, headquartered in New York’s Chenango County, was founded in 2005 by 40-year old Hamdi Ulukaya, who was born and raised in Turkey. He launched Chobani in 2007 with the vice president of sales, Kyle O’Brien. The pair decided on the name Chobani after a three-hour, snowy drive to buy a piece of production equipment. Chobani means shepherd, a symbol of safety and good, in several Mediterranean languages. It now tops the booming Greek yogurt segment, which grew 200 percent last year, along with the larger yogurt category.

“Chobani’s decision to locate its sales headquarters in Charlotte is proof positive that businesses from all industries see the competitive advantage our
city provides,” said Bob Morgan, Charlotte Chamber president. “We expect great things to come from Chobani, and applaud them for their rapid rise to
one of the country’s most lucrative yogurt brands.”

Chobani currently has 17 employees in Charlotte. With the new sales headquarters and room to grow, the company anticipates accelerated hiring and to potentially reach 60 employees in Charlotte by the end of 2013. The average salary for the new positions is $70,000.

New school will offer child care, preschool

Parents soon will have another option in early-childhood education.

Providence Preparatory School - a new child-care center, preschool and more - is slated to launch in south Charlotte later this year.

The private, for-profit center will be on Providence Road near where it crosses Sharon Amity Road.

Providence Preparatory will offer a comprehensive array of components. The child-care center and preschool are to open in fall 2012, while a kindergarten planned for 2013.

After-school programs, but not school, for children in elementary grades also will be offered. Summer camps and extracurricular activities like dance lessons are other features.

The facility plans concierge-style amenities and services - such as arranging dry-cleaning - for parents. On-site training classrooms will meet continuing-education needs of the center's teachers, as well as other area teachers.

Chiquita Likes its Charlotte Home, Seeks Fresh Brands

As his company moves to Charlotte, CEO Fernando Aguirre is trying to reshape Chiquita Brands into something more than a purveyor of bananas, an iconic but low-margin fruit.

On Monday, during an interview with the Observer, Aguirre said Chiquita is expanding its brand into new products. The company last week reported an $11 million quarterly loss, as the price of bananas – which make up a large share of Chiquita’s revenue – slumped.

Chiquita is moving forward with its relocation to Charlotte and has hired more than 100 people locally. The company is planning to transfer about 160 employees, mostly from Cincinnati, and hire about 150 more in Charlotte to bring the total workforce to more than 400.

Charlotte Chamber - First Quarter Jobs Number Shows Economy is Improving

The beginning of 2012 is evidence that Charlotte’s economy is moving in the right direction. In fact, this is the best first quarter for investment since 2008. The latest numbers from the Employment Security Commission indicate that county employment is up 2.4 percent from this time last year. Retail spending also continues to rise, and the retail trade and food service industries are taking advantage. These two sectors accounted for more than one-third of the number of new or expanded jobs and firms. Overall, the first quarter of 2012 resulted in 285 new or expanding firms producing 2,058 jobs, $313 million in investment and 1.8 million additional square feet.

Construction on three speculative buildings began in the first quarter at Airport Commerce Center, Mallard Pointe and Northlake Commerce Center. This is one indicator that shows developers’ confidence in the recovery of the Charlotte economy.

The healthcare industry continues to lead the way in growth. Carolinas Healthcare System recently finished an expansion project in Pineville and announced two more free-standing emergency rooms; Presbyterian Hospital began renovating the E-wing and recently received approval to replace its orthopedic hospital.

Companies More Upbeat on U.S. Economy, NABE Survey Shows

Companies are growing more upbeat about the U.S. economy this year and plan to take on more workers as demand improves, a survey showed.

Some 78 percent of businesses, the most in a year, project the world’s largest economy will expand more than 2 percent in 2012, according to the National Association for Business Economics’ April survey released today in Washington. The share is up from 65 percent in the group’s January report.

About four in 10 firms, the most since July 2011, said they expect employment to pick up in the next six months, showing businesses are looking beyond higher oil prices and Europe’s debt crisis. At the same time, 66 percent said they expect no change in prices in the next three months, indicating Federal Reserve policy makers will have room to keep interest rates low to nurture the almost three-year-old expansion.

A Sign of the Times: Big Hiring is Back at US Colleges

Hiring is back in a big way on many college campuses, one of several signs a recovery in the U.S. jobs market is gaining traction.

Sean Chua expected the hunt for his first job after college to be tough. After all, he watched his brother struggle to find a position when he graduated back in 2008. But his fears were unwarranted. The 21-year-old justice major at American University sent out only seven resumes before getting an offer earlier this month from IBM [IBM 208.65 0.38 (+0.18%) ] for an IT consulting job, making him a beneficiary of a turnaround in the labor market for U.S. graduates. "My mom's first position was with IBM so she is particularly proud," says Chua.

The Great Outdoors

Get up, go out and go play in the region's many outdoor escapes.

Boredom doesn’t stand a chance in Charlotte. The city takes full advantage of its sunny weather and natural beauty with a host of outdoor recreational opportunities. With an extensive park and greenway system, nearby lakes and mountains, and the largest manmade whitewater river in the world, the biggest challenge is trying to decide what to do first.

Charlotte Chamber - BIG Announces Results of Entrepreneurial Growth Survey for Charlotte Region

Today, the Business Innovation & Growth Council (BIG) announced the results of the first ever BIG Entrepreneurial Growth Index, led by Terry Cox, CEO of BIG, and David Jones, CEO of Peak 10, a longtime member and advisor to BIG.

The study, supported by quantitative data gathered from 94 high growth companies in the Charlotte, NC region, examined the growth history and investment profile of the area’s startup and entrepreneurial business community to uncover the high growth market size in Charlotte and what their impact on the community actually is.

“Based upon the survey results, we believe the high growth entrepreneurial economy accounts for more than one billion dollars in revenue within our region,” says Cox. “Beyond significant revenue, they contribute to job growth, healthy payrolls, and the potential to continue helping the economy grow in coming decades. It also confirms there is little involvement from institutional investors in area business.”

Jones adds, “As a long-time entrepreneur, this validates my belief that there is a significant, unsung population of vibrant growth companies here that typically get little recognition for the jobs and investment they make in the region. Numbers speak louder than words.”

*Key study findings include:

· A 25-30% average revenue growth rate over each of the last three years.

· A projected total of $650 million in revenue for 2012 with a growth rate of 30% over 2011.

· A 25% growth rate in employment with projected 622 new jobs in 2012 for the reporting companies in total

· An average of 30 employees per company over the last three years, with an average weighted salary of $55,000 per year

· Funding sources for businesses in the survey were as follows:

o 1% Venture Capital

o 12% Private Equity

o 22% Angel Investment

o 20% Bank Financing

o 45% Self Funded

· Fifty percent (50%) of the companies reporting are less than five years old; 80% are less than ten years old.
