Creative Writing App Smash - Learn Moore

Creative Writing App Smash - Learn Moore | Character and character tools | Scoop.it
Earlier this month I decided to participate in the Thinglink App Smash Challenge, facilitated by Susan Oxnevad. The goal is to use ThingLink as a presentation tool to demonstrate how to combine the functionality of two or more apps to create, publish and share content. It was more difficult than I thought because I had a hard time narrowing down which apps I wanted to use in my submission. I finally decided on Book Creator because of its cross-curricular nature, and its ability to include various types of media. Here is the flow of the lesson:

Students choose a scene maker app to create an original visual writing prompt
Students upload their image to Book Creator
Add original composition using the text feature
Add narration by recording
Publish final project as e Book or movie

Teaching Practices Inventory Provides Tool to Help You Examine Your Teaching

Teaching Practices Inventory Provides Tool to Help You Examine Your Teaching | Character and character tools | Scoop.it

Maryellen Weimer, PhD:

Here’s a great resource: the Teaching Practices Inventory. It’s an inventory that lists and scores the extent to which research-based teaching practices are being used. It’s been developed for use in math and science courses, but researchers Carl Wieman and Sarah Gilbert suggest it can be used in engineering and social sciences courses, although they have not tested it there. I suspect it has an even wider application. Most of the items on the inventory are or could be practiced in most disciplines and programs

Microsoft's next surprise is free Office for iPad, iPhone, and Android - The Verge

Microsoft's next surprise is free Office for iPad, iPhone, and Android - The Verge | Character and character tools | Scoop.it

 - THE VergeMicrosoft's Office suite for iPad, iPhone, and Android is now free. In a surprise move, the software giant is shaking up its mobile Office strategy to keep consumers hooked to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents. Starting today, you'll no longer need an Office 365 subscription to edit documents or store them in the cloud. The move comes just days after Microsoft announced a strategic partnership with Dropbox to integrate the cloud storage service into Office across desktop, mobile, and the web. You can now download Office for iPad and store all your documents on Dropbox without paying Microsoft anything at all. Microsoft is also releasing a brand new iPhone app today, alongside a preview of Office for Android tablets, all with Dropbox integration.

It's true! And it works! Have tried it out - now there's no excuse not to work... To be honest, I do find Apple Pages to be a little more user-friendly on my iPad, and it also allows one to save one's documents as Word documents which is what I've being doing. So it's understandable why Microsoft has gone this route.

Unlocking the Mystery of Critical Thinking

Unlocking the Mystery of Critical Thinking | Character and character tools | Scoop.it
Critical thinking. We all endorse it. We all want our students to do it. And we claim to teach it. But do we? Do we even understand and agree what it means to think critically?

According to Paul and Elder’s (2013a) survey findings, most faculty don’t know what critical thinking is or how to teach it. Unless faculty explicitly and intentionally design their courses to build their students’ critical thinking skills and receive training in how to teach them, their students do not improve their ski
