A Treasure Trove of Digital Citizenship Resources for Teachers

A Treasure Trove of Digital Citizenship Resources for Teachers | Character and character tools | Scoop.it
With the increasing use of internet by our kids comes the risks that, if not addressed appropriately, would make this use disastrous. From online predators looming around waiting for their next victim to harassment and cyberbullying, these and several other issues are  waiving a red flag for parents, teachers, and education stakeholders to take an immediate action and make digital citizenship an essential component in the curriculum. Kids need to be aware of these risks and should be taught on how to surf the net safely.

Changes in the U.S. Economic Geography

Changes in the U.S. Economic Geography | Character and character tools | Scoop.it
In 1990, the manufacturing industry was the leading employer in most U.S. states, followed by retail trade. In 2003, retail trade was the leading employer in a majority of states. By 2013, health care and social assistance was the dominant industry in 34 states. This animated map shows the top industry in each state and the District of Columbia from 1990 to 2013.

Danielle Lip's curator insight, January 26, 2015 4:19 PM

I found it quite interesting to see that most of the world in 1990 had manufacturing jobs because working at factories was the only job that was accessible with not many health care service oppurtunities. While in 2013 health care takes up most of North America, when you might expect the majority of North America to be made up of retail trade because so many malls and building are being constructed throughout the world. One positive part of this map is that job opportunities were even there in the first place, without working the economy will go downhill.

Lora Tortolani's curator insight, February 2, 2015 6:49 PM

It's amazing to see how priorities have shifted over time.  Also, this is a great display of how technology has taken over what once was human labor.

Alex Smiga's curator insight, March 14, 7:43 PM

Shifting economies.

This interactive map is a powerful way to visually display the changes in the economic geography of the United States.  It is especially useful when discussing the transition of an economy from the secondary sector to tertiary sector.

Comparing the five major world religions

"It's perfectly human to grapple with questions, like 'Where do we come from?' and 'How do I live a life of meaning?' These existential questions are central to the five major world religions -- and that's not all that connects these faiths. John Bellaimey explains the intertwined histories and cultures of Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam."

I enjoyed making instructional videos for my students and letting them make them as well.  This article covers why we should not be hung up on having a polished video because shorter, less formal videos can be more effective.  I used the app Explain Everything on my iPad to record lessons, but there are some who say that having the teacher in the video is more effective.  I wasn't ready for that.

The free version only allows public mindmaps/brainstorms, so if you are in a school setting and don't want student work to be shared, this might not be the right tool. The professional version that allows you to make the maps private is a steep $49 a month.

"I’ve been writing about digital media for nearly 30 years, and over that time, I’ve been asked over and over again by readers, critics, scholars and myself: “Do these personal computers, digital networks, webs of unfiltered information, mobile attention magnets do us more good than harm — as individuals, families, communities, and societies?” I have come to believe that the answer is: “It depends on how many people know how to use these technologies to their own benefit and that of the commons.”

Nearly every bit of information can be obtained in seconds, somewhere online. The issue has become finding the proverbial "needle in the haystack".

It has become mush more important to understand how to filter the good from the bad and the ugly.

How to Get the Most Out of Student-Owned Devices in Any Classroom | Character and character tools | Scoop.it

Technical issues with devices can be a headache, so setting some ground rules for device management helps mitigate some hiccups. Mills recommends making it clear that it is students’ responsibility to bring their device to school charged and ready to go. Designating a spot on student desks or tables where devices go when they aren’t being used for a specific assignment is also a great way to deter students from succumbing to distraction.

Try Creating Comics to Get Students to Share Stories About Themselves - iPad Apps for School

Try Creating Comics to Get Students to Share Stories About Themselves - iPad Apps for School | Character and character tools | Scoop.it

"I shared this idea on Free Technology for Teachers earlier today and I’m sharing it here to bring an iPad slant to it. At the beginning of the new school year it can take a while for new students to open up to each other and to you. One way to get them to share stories about themselves is to have them put it into a fun comic story. Through creating comic stories you can have students share favorite stories from their summer vacations. In the process students learn how to use a new tool, practice developing storylines, and they let you in on a little bit of who they are as people. Here are three iPad apps that I like to use to create comic stories."
