Comprehensive List of Free e-Book Websites for your e-Reader

Comprehensive List of Free e-Book Websites for your e-Reader | Character and character tools | Scoop.it

If you own an e-reader you often can only buy e-books from the bookstore that is bundled on your device. Many of the budget e-readers out there don’t even have a bookstore that is accessible by users and many people are left to fend for themselves to load content on it.

Here is a comprehensive free e-book resource catalog online. All of these books are hardware agnostic, which means they are not locked by DRM (Digital Rights Management). All you have to do is simply download a title and load in via the USB cable from your computer to your e-reader. Many of these sites also provide the books in more than one format, so they will work with your Amazon Kindle, Kobo, Barnes and Noble Nook, Sony e-reader and hundreds of others.

Colleague Annette Simmons, author of several ground breaking books on business storytelling, has written this terrific post helping anyone get unstuck about their stories.

This article goes hand-in-hand with another post I curated last week from colleague Shawn Callahan on spotting stories.

What I love about this post is how Simmons starts off -- with the hidden fear we all have about storytelling. She then gives clear directions for finding your stories that will get you over that hump.

Hey, even I freeze up when someone out of the blue asks, "So tell me one of your stories". I like all of Simmon's 4 buckets and use them to break up that frozen place I sometimes find myself in.

Enjoy this post and get story-ing!

Creative Ways To Use Skype In The Classroom

The answer: in more ways than you could imagine. While Skype was not designed as an educational tool, it’s quickly becoming one as teachers discover the many ways it enriches their lessons and the lives of their students. Even something as simple as hosting a guest speaker through a video call can add excitement to a lesson.

As with any tech tool, it can seem daunting to introduce this into your classroom at first. If you don’t know where to start, try one of these five creative ideas.

In the past, this application would be used in a collaborative sense to connect geographically dispersed learners. This article displays virtual collaboration reinvented through several of the mentioned activities. If Skype had a recording feature this would provide even more affordances to further reinvent itself within the e-learning realm.

Kelly's curator insight, February 23, 11:00 PM

While Skype offers an additional option, it is limited by the 1:1 connection (unless you pay for an upgraded version) as well as the inability to screenshare, etc. However, it may be a very good option when looking at international connections and low-cost alternatives and should not be summarily dismissed.

Using Book Creator as an Assessment Tool

Using Book Creator as an Assessment Tool | Character and character tools | Scoop.it

Book creator has probably been the app I have used most, in my teaching, with pupils and in my training. The blank canvas aspect means it can be used across the whole curriculum and the addition of the pen tool in the last few weeks has added to that.

We use Showbie at school for pupils to share their work, including books made with Book Creator from the iPads and home to the teachers for assessment. Recently, we have used both the Pen Tool and Record feature to give feedback on the pupils' eBooks. The pupils send their books using Showbie and the teacher opens them up on his/her iPad. They can then annotate with their voice, pen and text. The book can then be sent back to the pupils using Showbie. The pupil can either change the original book and delete the annotated one or change the annotated book and delete the original.

The screenshot shows a book of a Science experiment. The teacher can annotate with arrows but also add audio feedback. All elements of Book Creator can be deleted so the pupil can restore any annotated book to the original.

This is obviously not a new idea but the pen tool has certainly made this quicker in a widely used app such as Book Creator.

Abstract

A co-teaching online environment has the potential to help more efficiently meet the needs of online learners and provide greater satisfaction for instructors. A well-trained pair of instructors can complement each other, meeting student needs in a timely manner, as well as providing students with the opportunity to view topics from different perspectives, and to gain more in-depth feedback about their work. Specific strategies for a successful online co-teaching experience, including: how to create a successful online learning community; achieve effective course management; provide systematic, in-depth assessment of student learning; and providing timely feedback will be addressed. Methods to improve upon one-another’s teaching strengths will be introduced as well as building community between your peer co-teacher and students.

Technology is way too often given a bad rap by administrators and educators as a distraction or a hazard for students.  When technology is integrated intentionally with foresight and with intention of addressing specific growth-oriented goals, it increases the potential to help students learn, develop, and grow in unique ways.  It can be used to help address the needs as described by Maslow.
