Make Presentations Different

Make Presentations Different | Character and character tools | Scoop.it

With SlideIdea, presentations are no longer a one-man show. SlideIdea gives presenters the tools to engage their audience through their audience’s smart phones, laptops, and tablets. Each SlideIdea presentation is provided a unique URL (i.e, www.sld.im/12345 ). Regardless of the location, an audience can simply input the URL into their internet browser and then immediately follow along with slides, participate in polls, ask questions, or even network.

Slideideia permite ainda importar (e melhorar) apresentações Powerpoint e ficheiros Pdf.

Não chega? Muito bem: com Slideideia pode ainda gravar as suas falas durante a apresentação. Excelente!

App of the Week: Post-it Plus brings Post-it notes into the digital age - GeekWire

App of the Week: Post-it Plus brings Post-it notes into the digital age - GeekWire | Character and character tools | Scoop.it

"As someone who writes fiction for fun in my off hours, Post-it notes have been an integral part of my writing process. At some point in a story’s development, I usually end up covering a wall somewhere with a series of multi-colored notes that looks like something out of a crime procedural murder investigation.

The downside to all that is it’s hard to take all of the structure I put up on the wall and translate it into a digital format that travels with me while I’m using other tools to write the story itself. That’s why 3M created Post-it Plus, an app that allows people to use their iPhone and iPad to scan and digitize groups of sticky notes all in one fell swoop.

Users just open up the app, tap on the camera button,

Users just open up the app, tap on the camera button, and line it up with a group of notes. Once they take a snapshot, the app will separate out each discrete note from the image and save them all on a virtual board with the same layout that they had in meatspace."

America is rapidly aging in a country built for the young

America is rapidly aging in a country built for the young | Character and character tools | Scoop.it

"Although we seldom think about them this way, most American communities as they exist today were built for the spry and mobile. We've constructed millions of multi-story, single-family homes where the master bedroom is on the second floor, where the lawn outside requires weekly upkeep, where the mailbox is a stroll away. We've designed neighborhoods where everyday errands require a driver's license. We've planned whole cities where, if you don't have a car, it's not particularly easy to walk anywhere — especially not if you move gingerly.

This reality has been a fine one for a younger country. Those multi-story, single-family homes with broad lawns were great for Baby Boomers when they had young families. And car-dependent suburbs have been fine for residents with the means and mobility to drive everywhere. But as the Baby Boomers whose preferences drove a lot of these trends continue to age, it's becoming increasingly clear that the housing and communities we've built won't work very well for the old."

Wilmine Merlain's curator insight, September 22, 12:47 PM

This reality is detrimental to the future of our society because it focuses on the now rather than looking into long terms on how these changes will impact our world in the long run. Looking at the way our society is progressing, these changes are relevant in major metropolitan cities, where the job market is attractive to the young rather than those with over 30 years of experience. In our society, not many see retirement being in the center of the city. Creating a society that accommodates both the young and the old, along with the married and unmarried is pivotal to the progression of  our ever changing world.

Alexandra Piggott's curator insight, October 18, 6:48 PM

This is also an issue in Australia where the overwhelming majority of people live in single story dwellings and are very car reliant.

18 Apps That Will Inspire Creativity In Your Everyday Life - Huffington Post | Character and character tools | Scoop.it
Mobile devices like iPads and Androids have transformed the way we experience boredom. No longer is a wayward commuter forced to play Snake or Tetris, occupying themselves in a hardly satisfying, and utterly pixelated virtual reality. The tablet or smart phone-wielding travelers can now immerse themselves in an entire library of art and culture-related distractions, finding solace in everything from a Vincent van Gogh game to a digital version of the Louvre.

Just this week, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a 140-year-old cultural stalwart of New York City, went the way of the future and introduced an iPhone app. Described as "exceedingly simple and modest" by Forbes, the move to make art more accessible is something we can't help but love. So, in the spirit of the Met's 21st century attitude, we've put together a list of mobile museums and art-honoring programs that will spark creativity in your everyday life.

Seth Dixon's curator insight, September 12, 12:29 PM

For many Americans that are traveling abroad for the first time, realizing that eggs aren't in the refrigerator is a bit of a culture shock (not to mention the moment they find milk in a box that also isn't being refrigerated).  Agricultural practices dictate storage requirements and some things we might have imagined were universal are actually place-specific or peculiar to our cultural setting.  What we are taught to think of as gross, appropriate, attractive or even sanitary is often steeped in a cultural context.  So is it strange the we refrigerate our eggs in the United States, or that they don't in other places?

Bad PowerPoint design may be just as detrimental to your presentation as smelling like a horse. When you have poorly designed slides, a few things happen: your professionalism is questioned (because you essentially tell the people looking at your PowerPoint that you don't know how to create professional work); your audience members get distracted as they toggle between looking at your bad design and listen to what you're actually saying (and, in the end, they don't really ingest either); and your audience just gets bored or annoyed--which is about the worst possible outcome when presenting.
