How Much Data Is Generated On Twitter, Instagram, Vine, Tinder & WhatsApp Every Minute? | AllTwitter | Character and character tools | Scoop.it

Here’s the thing: the internet never sleeps.

Which means data never sleeps, and the internet sure likes to use up a lot of it. How much? In any given minute, 277,000 tweets are published on Twitter, 216,000 photos are sent to Instagram and 8,333 videos are shared on Vine.

And we’re just getting started. Over that same 60 second period, 347,222 photos are sent on WhatsApp, 416,667 swipes are made on Tinder and 3,472 images are pinned on Pinterest.

And if you think that’s impressive, Google receives 4 millions search queries, Facebook users share 2.46 million pieces of content and 204 million email messages are sent each and every minute of the day.

This visual from DOMO looks at how much data is generated every minute across the net....

The recent drought in California has only deepened and this Washington Post article shows an animated map that highlights the temporal and spatial patterns in the drought data (hint--it's not pretty).  In a related note, May 2014 was the hottest May in recorded history.

Questions to Consider: What are some reasons (both from human and physical geography) for this severe drought? What can be done in the short-term to lessen the problem? What can be done to make California’s water situation better for the next 50 years?

Apps that rise to the top: Tested and approved by teachers

Apps that rise to the top: Tested and approved by teachers | Character and character tools | Scoop.it

With the thousands of educational apps vying for the attention of busy teachers, it can be hard to sift for the gold. Michelle Luhtala, a savvy librarian from New Canaan High School in Connecticut has crowd-sourced the best, most extensive list of appsvoted on by educators around the country.

“I wanted to make sure we had some flexibility because there’s no one app that’s better than all the others,” Luhtala said. Some apps are best for younger students, others are more complicated, better suited for high school students. Many apps do one thing really well, but aren’t great at everything. Still others are bought, redesigned or just disappear — so it’s always good to know about an array of tools to suit the need at hand.

40 maps that explain food in America

40 maps that explain food in America | Character and character tools | Scoop.it

"The future of the nations will depend on the manner of how they feed themselves, wrote the French epicurean Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin in 1826. Almost 200 years later, how nations feed themselves has gotten a lot more complicated. That’s particularly true in the US, where food insecurity coexists with an obesity crisis, where fast food is everywhere and farmer’s markets are spreading, where foodies have never had more power and McDonald’s has never had more locations, and where the possibility of a barbecue-based civil war is always near. So here are 40 maps, charts, and graphs that show where our food comes from and how we eat it, with some drinking thrown in for good measure."

PLEASE BE SURE TO READ THE COMMENTS ON THIS POST by Daniel J. Lewis and myself

Daniel:

"Generally good post! I have some disagreements over the methodology of examining what other podcasters do and cite that as steps for success.

The Snowball is actually a generally poor choice for starting out. It locks you into a USB workflow and you have to throw away the mic when you get professional gear. It also gives inferior audio quality to better mics in the same price range—like the Audio Technica ATR2100-USB or AT2005USB.

I was a little disappointed to see none of the podcasting experts cited or recommended—Dave Jackson, Ray Ortega, Cliff Ravenscraft, or myself (Daniel J. Lewis).

Transcripts aren't the right way to go. Humans (and search engines) want quality content and a transcript is usually not quality content because it wastes so much time with the dialog. The best kinds of show notes for humans and SEO are concise and written like a blog post. Humans love it, Google loves it, and you make your content far more accessible to readers."

Me:

"I agree with all your points Daniel!

Kevan nice to see you talking about podcasting however you really can't have a credible discussion about starting a podcast without referencing the outstanding resources provided by Dave, Ray, Cliff or Daniel (IMO)."

What Is The Ideal Length Of A Tweet (And Other Communications)? - Edudemic

What Is The Ideal Length Of A Tweet (And Other Communications)? - Edudemic | Character and character tools | Scoop.it

"There are so many ways that teachers are using social media –  both in the classroom and for their own professional development. From Instagram   and Facebook in the classroom to Twitter lists and hashtags for their PLN, there are so many social networks and so much content to choose from when you’re looking. You know that whether you’re browsing through your Twitter feed or searching on Pinterest, there are certain things that catch your eye and other things that blend into the background. You pick and choose what looks interesting to you.

When you’re the creator of the content, however – either for professional use with other teachers or for student’s consumption – you need to be concerned with getting your message out there in a way that ensures it isn’t the content that is blending into the background. The handy infographic below takes a look at the ideal length for all of your social media postings.  Keep reading to learn more!"

Tom Cockburn's curator insight, June 24, 2:49 AM

Of course some types of tweets are best left unposted whatever size they are

Chris Eller's curator insight, June 24, 10:44 AM

This is a topic I, personally, have been wrestling with recently. If you look at many of the forms of communication listed in the infographic, the common denominator is how short our attention span is when consuming online information.

For example,

  • Video - 3 to 3.5 minutes
  • Presentation (sermon?) - 18 minutes
  • Podcast - 22 minutes
  • Headline - 60 characters

Based on my own informal research at First Family Church, I would have to agree with the the overall consensus of these findings. A common complaint I receive in our Small Group Curriculum Evaluations is that we provide too much information. Consequently, I am looking for ways to break our teaching into even smaller chunks and develop teaching helps (e.g. handouts) that are available by clicking a link rather than including in the formal lesson.

From a church perspective, would it be too frightening to try and evaluate how engaged people are during a 40 to 50 minute sermon? A very informal indication could be how many people are using their phones or mobile devices during a sermon. Yes, they have their Bible on their device, and it is likely they are referring to the digital Bible occasionally, but if someone is staring intently at their phone or tablet for an extended period of time during the sermon, odds are good they have transitioned to something else and are focused on the content on their device rather than actively listening to the sermon.

If you have the courage, try and see how many in your church this Sunday are staring at their mobile devices rather than actively listening to your sermon.

What are your thoughts? Will the church need to adjust its centuries-old method of teaching as the attention span of church attenders shrinks?

The You Want to Know About Copyright in Education Infographic

The You Want to Know About Copyright in Education Infographic | Character and character tools | Scoop.it

As I’ve mentioned before—it is not only important for educators to encourage students to push the technological envelope, but it’s equally essential that we teach them to navigate the digital world in a responsible manner. But in order to do so, we must first become familiar with copyright rules and fair use guidelines ourselves—a task that can seem very daunting and frustrating at times.

If you’ve ever used online materials for teaching and learning, then I’m sure you have wondered one or more of the following: Do I need permission to use this image? Can I share this video on my classroom web site? Would it be best for my me and/or my students to create my/their own media?

Well, it may not answer all of your burning questions, but the copyright flowchart shown below will surely help with some of the confusion surrounding this very relevant and significant topic.
