Bullying is national problem with far reaching effects. It has been around for a long time. This article challenges people's perceptions about bullying. It asks questions regarding the responsibilities of parents and teachers, and how they choose to either address or ignore the problem. In recent years cyber bullying has become an epidemic.  Bullying is not some harmless rite of passage that children should have to endure. It is harmful to  self-esteem, affects a child's ability to function in school, and has long range effects on the victim. Bullying can be done by an individual or by a group. Bullying is a form of abuse, whether it is emotional or physical. It can lead to the victim committing suicide. Children who were bullied in childhood tend to develop emotional and mental health issues in adolescence. One way we can help the victim have a voice is to maintain open communication. Victims need to have the support of both parents and teachers to overcome the negative effects that will occur. Parents, talk to your child about bullying. and teach ways to cope with a bully. Fellow student's, don't be a bystander. Tell an adult. Be a friend to the victim. Together we can stop bullying and the harmful social and mental health problems that occur because of it.
