Will Corporate Monopolies Dominate the Green Economy? - Earth, Inc | CLIMATE CHANGE WILL IMPACT US ALL | Scoop.it

Rio+20 may launch the "biggest Earth grab in 500 years," argues new report.

"While seductive, the new green techno-fixes are dangerous because they will spur even greater convergence and concentration of corporate power and unleash privately owned technologies into communities that have not been consulted about -- or prepared for -- their impacts," warns ETC Group. "If the 'Green Economy' is imposed without full intergovernmental debate and extensive involvement from peoples' organizations and civil society, [Rio+20] risks becoming the biggest Earth Grab in more than 500 years."[5]

WASN'T ANYBODY LISTENING? World Scientists’ Warning to Humanity 1992

On November 18, 1992 approximately 1700 scientists from around the world, and the majority of the Nobel Prize laureates in the sciences, signed the document titled ‘World Scientist’s Warning to Humanity‘.

Human beings and the natural world are on a collision course. Human activities inflict harsh and often irreversible damage on the environment and on critical resources. If not checked, many of our current practices put at serious risk the future that we wish for human society and the plant and animal kingdoms, and may so alter the living world that it will be unable to sustain life in the manner that we know. Fundamental changes are urgent if we are to avoid the collision our present course will bring about.

Could climate change cause wars?

Could climate change cause wars? | CLIMATE CHANGE WILL IMPACT US ALL | Scoop.it

Admiral Neil Morisetti, the UK’s Climate and Energy Security Envoy to the Republic of Korea called climate change a “risk multiplier” – it amplifies existing stresses around the world and increases the possibility of conflict. And climate change affects everyone, no matter where we live in the world. Take a look at this map to see what he means.

Global warming temperature could get hot enough to make earth uninhabitable for us by 2300

Due to limits of human heat tolerance, much of Earth’s surface may not be habitable by 2300 if we continue to emit greenhouse gases at the current rate. Sherwood states that well-known threats like rising oceans and economic depressions are not nearly as serious as the potential heat that might make the world, thermally, partly or completely uninhabitable by humans.

NASA: The current and future consequences of global change

NASA: The current and future consequences of global change | CLIMATE CHANGE WILL IMPACT US ALL | Scoop.it

NASA: Global climate change has already had observable effects on the environment. Glaciers have shrunk, ice on rivers and lakes is breaking up earlier, plant and animal ranges have shifted and trees are flowering sooner.

Effects that scientists had predicted in the past would result from global climate change are now occuring: loss of sea ice, accelerated sea level rise and longer, more intense heat waves.

Climate Scientists Defense Fund – Please Help

Many scientists do not enjoy the institutional support necessary to fight attacks from well-funded science-denying groups. We need to help scientists to defend themselves. If ATI succeeds in this case, it would set a terrible precedent for scientists at public institutions across the country. But if they are turned back here, it will send a clear message to climate deniers that scientists are willing to stand up to them and fight for their rights.

Update (12/21/11): The Climate Science Legal Defense Fund (CSLDF) is now an affiliate of the non-profit Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER).  Donations are now tax-deductible ...

US 2012 ELECTIONS: Is there a way to improve US economy without sacrificing environmental concerns? | CLIMATE CHANGE WILL IMPACT US ALL | Scoop.it
As the US gears up for the 2012 presidential election, environmental issues have become one of the major talking points.

"Few challenges facing America and the world are more urgent than combating climate change. The science is beyond dispute and the facts are clear. Sea levels are rising, coast lines are shrinking. We've seen record drought, spreading famine and storms that are growing stronger with each passing Hurricane season."

-Barack Obama, US president

For Seal Pups on Thin Ice, a Short Childhood

For Seal Pups on Thin Ice, a Short Childhood | CLIMATE CHANGE WILL IMPACT US ALL | Scoop.it
Fewer ice drifts and an earlier arrival of spring imperil many harp seal pups.

For a mother harp seal, timing is everything. Pups are born and nursed on seasonal sea ice during a brief window before the spring sun melts the ephemeral nursery. After only 12 days, the mother weans her pups and the family slides into the ocean together.

Should the ice melt early, however, the pups will meet an early end, either drowning in the sea or getting crushed by shifting floes. In 2010, nearly 100 percent of the eastern Canadian pups were estimated to have perished in this situation.
