Is The Sixth Mass Extinction Is Upon Us?

Is The Sixth Mass Extinction Is Upon Us? | CLIMATE CHANGE WILL IMPACT US ALL | Scoop.it

May 6, 2013 Newsweek, The Daily Beast

Are we in the first act of a mass extinction that will end in the death of millions of plant and animal species across the planet, including us? Proponents of the “sixth extinction” theory believe the answer is yes.

Five mass extinctions have nearly wiped out life on earth. As Annalee Newitz writes in her new book, the sixth is coming... http://www.thedailybeast.com/newsweek/2013/05/06/the-sixth-mass-extinction-is-upon-us-can-humans-survive.html?source=socialflow&account=newsweek&medium=twitter

US Climate plan aims to help ecosystems adapt to change

The debate over the causes of climate change continues to rage, but federal, state and tribal agencies aren't waiting around for the argument to be settled. They believe climate change is here, and they're working on ways to help wildlife, land and communities adapt.

Two federal agencies and a state wildlife department have developed a broad plan for helping ecosystems become more resilient as the climate changes.

Biodiversity crisis: Climate Change and Habitat Loss causing 6th mass extinction : scientists

Scientists meeting at the University of Copenhagen have warned that biodiversity is declining rapidly throughout the world, describing the loss of species as the 6th mass extinction event on the earth. The world is losing species at a rate that is 100 to 1000 times faster than the natural extinction rate, with the challenges of conserving the world's species larger than mitigating the negative effects of global climate change.

AFRICA: At the Nexus of Agrofuels, Land Grabs and Hunger – Part 2 | CLIMATE CHANGE WILL IMPACT US ALL | Scoop.it

The forests in Africa absorb over 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon annually. With these diverse and natural forests, grasslands and prairie lands disappearing under investment schemes and the development of monoculture plantations for supposed "green" energy alternatives like agrofuels, not much else remains to absorb the shocks of hunger and climate change.

Size, seed dispersal key to survival of Arctic plants facing climate change: study

Size, seed dispersal key to survival of Arctic plants facing climate change: study | CLIMATE CHANGE WILL IMPACT US ALL | Scoop.it

“Genetic variation is crucial for species to adapt to changing climate,” said researcher Inger Greve Alsos, associate professor at the University of Tromsø in Norway.

“If a species with limited seed dispersal perish from an area, it means that this species as a whole will experience an irrevocable loss of genetic diversity.”
