8 Great Education and Instructional Technology Infographics ... | Changing the Way We Teach | Scoop.it
There's been a surge in the number of Infographics published this year that focus on instructional technologies and how they are evolving and being used.
Colene Hardy's insight:

I am LOVING infographics right now. A teachers at my school was interested in trying it out. infogr.am has somewhat of a learning curve, but it seems to be the best of the tools we tried. Easel.ly was also pretty great, but students didn't have the option of making the really long kind of infographic that is so popular right now. Plus, it fits a lot of information.

Doctors now say: Read to kids from birth | On Our Minds | Changing the Way We Teach | Scoop.it
Colene Hardy's insight:

I LOVE reading and I guess I'm lucky that it has always been a favorite past time because it seems like I know a LOT of people who haven't read a book in years. I think it's important people know that reading is an activity that packs a punch. Reading not only makes us better readers, it improves stress levels, memory, spelling, vocabulary, writing, emotional and social intelligence, analytical thinking, ability to synthesize materials, creativity, and of course, our knowledge. #readeveryday

How Lexiles Harm Students | Mike Mullin | Changing the Way We Teach | Scoop.it
Colene Hardy's insight:

When I even start thinking about Lexile, I get irritated. I have never understood why we use it or what the point is. Don't we just want our kids to read and read; and then read some more? Who cares what the lexile is? If they love to read and they keep doing it, they will read books with all sorts of lexiles and be so much the better for it.

Teach the Teachers Well

Teach the Teachers Well | Changing the Way We Teach | Scoop.it
When dealing with students’ emotional and behavior problems, like anxiety and bullying, common sense and good intentions are often not enough.
Colene Hardy's insight:

Thoughtful article. In my experience, I have found that the teachers who are the most resistant to SEL are the one's who speak the language the least fluently. It also takes extensive training and follow-up which is not something that all schools are very good at.

Creative technology tools allow for a combination of physical and computer-based play activities that support healthy cognitive development.
Colene Hardy's insight:

Another great article from Creative Educator. I'm personally a really big fan of kids creating their own stories/books/movies. I see first hand how much fun they have doing it. It's a head fake. They feel like they're just having fun and messing around with their friends. But we know they're also developing their minds and multiple skill sets.

Snow Days Turn Into E-Learning Days for Some Schools

Snow Days Turn Into E-Learning Days for Some Schools | Changing the Way We Teach | Scoop.it
Recent bouts of snow and extreme cold across many states have led to widespread school cancellations, but some educators have tapped e-learning to keep up educational momentum.
Colene Hardy's insight:

I'm not sure how I feel about this. It is an interesting way to utilize tech. But as a person who thinks year round schooling sounds fantastic, I'm a little bit against this idea. Can't we just have some extra days during these long winters to relax??

The Invisible iPad: It’s Not About the Device

The Invisible iPad: It’s Not About the Device | Changing the Way We Teach | Scoop.it
The challenge for educators, especially directors of educational technology, is not to limit how our teachers teach, but to focus on the foundational skills and provide a clear and concrete formula for how different technological devices and applications will enhance these skills in order to give a learner the ability to create a product that will change the world.

I have like the "invisible" idea since I first heard it.

Stop talking tech: 3 tips for pedagogy-based coaching

Stop talking tech: 3 tips for pedagogy-based coaching | Changing the Way We Teach | Scoop.it
Teachers care about creating authentic learning experiences, and it’s up to coaches to show how technology can help them do that.
Colene Hardy's insight:

A fellow Coach at school shared this with me. Loved it - especially about asking questions. Sometimes I feel like teachers just want me to tell them what tool to use without really explaining what they are doing. I often ask questions, but not always (it depends on the mood of the moment, the personality of the teacher and my relationship with him or her). I think I will be much less reserved with question asking from now on.

Teaching Students to Fail

Teaching Students to Fail | Changing the Way We Teach | Scoop.it
Teaching students to fail gives essential character while it changes a classroom to a more participatory, less fear-driven culture. Optimism can be taught.
Colene Hardy's insight:

Combining two topics that fascinate me - gamification and character education. Exit Ticket seems like a promising tool - I will definitely mention in it in future PD with my staff.

I heard someone suggest that we remove the word "failure" from a contract we were creating amongst the teachers. I thought about this with some sadness. It is a shame that failure is a dirty word.

Can Emotional Intelligence Be Taught?

Can Emotional Intelligence Be Taught? | Changing the Way We Teach | Scoop.it
If everybody knows that test scores and grades aren’t the keys to success, how do we teach, and measure, the things that are?
Colene Hardy's insight:

I remember watching a student with autism receiving an explicit explanation from this counselor about how to enter a conversation with kids and how to introduce a topic that he was interested in. There were multiple steps, specific numbers and specific words he was given to say. As I stood there watching, I thought, "really, if we look at all children, MANY of them are socially awkward and don't know how to do these things. Shouldn't we be doing this with all kids?" Great article!
