CHILD RESCUE MISSION SIERRA LEONE

The shock of being forced to drink human blood and watch his teenage sister be raped and butchered to death during Sierra Leone’s brutal civil war caused a young Sahr Yillia to lose his eyesight. Such was the extent of the trauma. Yet now, despite his blindness, he heads the Child Rescue Mission, a Sierra Leonean not-for-profit organisation that rescues street children and reunites families separated by the cruelties of war

The New Heroes . Sompop Jantraka

Sompop Jantraka has put his life on the line to save young women sold into prostitution by poor farming families. He is also proving that these women can be far more valuable to Thailand as educated members of the work force than as sex slaves.

Jantraka offers the poor families of young women between the ages of 8 and 18 (who are often desperate for income and easily deceived by brothel owners) an alternative to sending their daughters into prostitution by providing the girls with education, job training and employment assistance.

Plastic Bottles Light Up Slums | Allianz Knowledge

Discarded plastic bottles filled up with water and a bit of bleach light up the slum houses of Manila. With little more than waste plastic bottles filled up

with water, social entrepreneur Illac Diaz has found a new way to provide slum dwellers in the Philippines with light. Diaz’s smart solution, originally invented in 2002 in Brazil and further developed by students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is as simple as it is brilliant.

Punch a bottle-sized hole in the corrugated iron roof of a shack. Insert a one-liter plastic bottle into the hole and seal it there—about a third of the bottle remains above the rooftop, exposed to the sunlight, two thirds of the bottle is suspended inside the home like a giant bulb.

Isaac Durojaiye

Concerned about the health and environment issues created by the absence of public toilets in most Nigerian cities, Isaac started the first mobile toilet initiative in Nigeria to provide decent toilet facilities in strategic locations across the country. Improper disposal of human waste contributes to the heavily polluted waterways, rivers, and seas in and around Nigeria. Since most Nigerians rely directly on unfiltered water from these sources for their cooking, drinking, and washing, the spread of diseases such as diarrhoea, dysentery, and cholera is widespread and dangerous.

Chikukwa Project - An amazing story, African villagers turned their lives around

THE CHIKUKWA PROJECT is a feel good story out of Africa. For
the last 20 years an incredible permaculture project has been growing in
Zimbabwe. Where once the people of the Chikukwa villages suffered hunger,
malnutrition and high rates of disease, this community has turned its fortunes
around using permaculture farming techniques. Complementing these strategies
for food security, they have built their community strength through locally
controlled and initiated programs for permaculture training, conflict resolution,
women’s empowerment, primary education and HIV management. Now they have a
surplus of food and the people in these villages are healthy and proud of their
achievements. Their degraded landscape has been turned into a lush paradise.

These are some scenes of a film for which they are seeking postproduction funding. It's about the amazing permaculture project in Zimbabwe which has transformed the lives of 7,000 Shona Africans living in Chikukwa.

Liberia From Poverty to Dignity - AllAfrica.com

Testimonies and improved living conditions of beneficiaries of a pilot social cash transfer program in Bomi County, Liberias poorest county, are overwhelming and speak volumes of the program's success.

The SCT pilot scheme was launched in 2010 to protect children living in poor and vulnerable households. Bomi County, organizers said, was selected to pilot the program because of its exceptionally high level of food insecurity. Bomi has one of the lowest levels of food consumption in the country.

Access:energy -- IndieGoGo

Wind turbines made by Kenyans, for Kenyans.

Access:energy’s approach to energy provision is quite different from solar power projects – they build turbines from scratch at small workshops in Kenya, install them as energy hubs in rural villages and distribute power locally. They create skilled jobs in the places where people need them most.
THE IMPACT: Most Kenyan households are still reliant on kerosene lamps, disposable batteries and diesel generators. These energy sources are very expensive and harmful to human health.
JOB CREATION:Most other energy projects in Africa rely on importing products to sell or distribute. With your support this project will develop local production capacity - renewable energy technology built by Kenyans, for Kenyans.
LOCAL OWNERSHIP:We set up small clean energy hubs that are then managed by Kenyan communities, bringing self-reliance.
ACCESS TO ELECTRICITY:Our turbines are built to produce enough power for clinics to store vaccines and provide 24 hour obstetric care, to provide light for children to study at night, refrigeration for dairy farmers and fishermen, and for the whole village to be able to charge their mobile phones.

One Acre Fund

The One Acre Fund hopes to lead a revolution in chronic hunger alleviation in Africa, moving away from stop-gap measures like food aid towards a permanent solution. The vast majority of Africa’s hungry are farmers who grow their own food. Studies have shown that with basic farm tools, these farmers could at least triple their yield within six months. The One Acre Fund will unlock this permanent growth potential for even the poorest of the hungry by providing a comprehensive service bundle: farm inputs on credit, weekly farm education sessions, and access to output markets. In Africa, hunger is the number one contributor to childhood death. The One Acre Fund works with populations in which 15 percent of children die before reaching adulthood and 40 percent are physically stunted from a lifetime of severe hunger. Food means life for their members.
