Innovate across the business system - Bearing Consulting

Innovate across the business system - Bearing Consulting | GWTNext -GLOBAL WORKFORCE TRANSFORMATION - PAVING THE TRAIL TO THE FUTURE. | Scoop.it
All over the world, Innovation is high on executive’s agendas. However what innovation means and how it is prioritised has not been well understood, and within organisations different interpretations can often be confusing.
Laura Goodrich's insight:

The most successful companies recognise that innovation is a mainstream process, which brings together employees, customers, suppliers and a range of different partners from beyond the organisation. At the heart of these developments is the realisation that how you innovate determines what competitive advantages you deliver.

Today innovation can drive new service and product offerings and development of brands, ways of marketing, business models, delivery channels and so on, and it can also be at the root of new business opportunity creation and the launch of entirely new business models.

Innovation can be seen as a key differentiator in markets that are increasingly hard-fought and it is destined to become ever more so as competitive pressures continue to increase across all industry sectors. Innovation separates the winners from the losers. In a world of hyper competition, pro-active and continuous work with innovation is imperative to gain competitive advantage."

Making sense of sense-making | TomorrowToday

Making sense of sense-making | TomorrowToday | GWTNext -GLOBAL WORKFORCE TRANSFORMATION - PAVING THE TRAIL TO THE FUTURE. | Scoop.it
Laura Goodrich's insight:

"What is happening is that a number of change drivers are all working together to cause deep structural, disruptive change in the world right now. We are therefore living through more than an era of change. We have reached an inflection point in history, and are now living in an era where processes, systems, structures, products, services and careers no longer change – they transform. This era is not going to go away. It’s not being caused by the economic downturn (although the financial situation has served to accelerate the change drivers). It’s also not being caused by shifts in technology. In fact, almost all the technologies that appear to have changed the world (mobile phones, the Internet, smartphones) over the last decade are nothing more than the prologue for deep disruption that is about to crash on our shores. We firmly believe that the overwhelming majority of change is still ahead of us.

An Innovation Leadership Revolution Is Brewing | GWTNext -GLOBAL WORKFORCE TRANSFORMATION - PAVING THE TRAIL TO THE FUTURE. | Scoop.it
There is an innovation leadership revolution brewing.
Laura Goodrich's insight:

"A real, long-term, systemic improvement in innovation in our society as a whole will depend much, much more on our ability to develop innovative leaders, and much, much less on our continuing  to worry about money and policy and such.  If we address our “leadership deficit,” many of the other things we worry about may very well take care of themselves".

Why Estonia Has Started Teaching Its First-Graders To Code

Why Estonia Has Started Teaching Its First-Graders To Code | GWTNext -GLOBAL WORKFORCE TRANSFORMATION - PAVING THE TRAIL TO THE FUTURE. | Scoop.it
It's already ahead in getting public services online, now tiny Estonia is launching a nationwide scheme to teach school kids to write programs.

Estonia, a small country with a population of 1.3 million people, punches above its own weight when it comes to advancements in tech. It was the birthplace of Skype, one of the first countries to have a government that was fully e-enabled, and now it has launched a nationwide scheme to teach school kids from the age of seven to 19, how to write code. The idea isn’t to start churning out app developers of the future, but people who have smarter relationships with technology, computers and the Web .

So why start so early? “We want to change thinking that computers and programs are just things as they are. There is an opportunity to create something, and be a smart user of technology.” says Ave Lauringson, the coordinator of the project.

What's The Role Of A Hospital In 10 Years? - The Doctor Weighs In

What's The Role Of A Hospital In 10 Years? - The Doctor Weighs In | GWTNext -GLOBAL WORKFORCE TRANSFORMATION - PAVING THE TRAIL TO THE FUTURE. | Scoop.it
Topol has gone on the record stating that in the future, the only real reason to have a hospital is for its Intensive Care Units if digital medicine is adopted. His recent tweet of his vision was provocative comparing it to Wired’s vision.
Laura Goodrich's insight:

"While no analogy is perfect, health system boards would be well advised to study what newspaper industry leaders did (or perhaps more appropriately, didn’t do) when faced with a dramatic industry change. Turn back the clock 15 years and the following dynamics were present:

  • Newspaper leaders knew full well that dramatic change was underway and even made some tactical investments. However they didn’t fundamentally rethink their model beyond window-dressing.
  • Newspapers were comfortable as monopoly or oligopoly businesses allowing for plodding decisions. Their IT infrastructure mirrored the plodding pace with expensive and rigid technology architectures.
  • Newspaper companies bought up other newspaper chains and took on huge debt.
  • Owning printing presses was a de facto barrier to entry allowing newspapers unfettered dominance.
  • Depending on one’s perspective, it was the best of times or the worst of times to be a leader of local media enterprise.
The parallels with health systems today are clear. Consider the present dynamics:

The handwriting is on the wall for health systems but there is little evidence that organizations are aggressively moving at a scale corresponding to the enormity of the change.

The plodding pace and scale of innovation at most health systems isn’t up to the enormity of the task. The vast majority of health system innovation teams are constrained by how they have to fit innovation into an existing infrastructure. That approach rarely, if ever, leads to breakthroughs, as its true intent is to make tweaks to a current system rather than a rethink from the ground up."

Why I Love Gen Ys And You Should Too

Why I Love Gen Ys And You Should Too | GWTNext -GLOBAL WORKFORCE TRANSFORMATION - PAVING THE TRAIL TO THE FUTURE. | Scoop.it
Gen Ys, or Millennials, have gotten a bad reputation for having a sense of entitlement and being impatient. But they are changing the workplace for the better, and we're all starting to benefit.
Laura Goodrich's insight:

"In about ten years from now, Gen Y will make up 75% of the workforce. There’s power in those numbers. Many companies have realized that instead of asking Gen Ys to change, they must adapt to young workers’ expectations. Now, more than ever before, offices are offering flexible work arrangements, unlimited vacation and results only work environments (ROWEs).  Social media norms are relaxing, and the idea of what constitutes “work” is widening."

Hitting The Intergenerational Sweet Spot

Hitting The Intergenerational Sweet Spot | GWTNext -GLOBAL WORKFORCE TRANSFORMATION - PAVING THE TRAIL TO THE FUTURE. | Scoop.it
If you're a Millennial, or manage one, here's the reality of what this generation wants.
Laura Goodrich's insight:

"Regardless of what generation you represent, being self-aware and learning to understand others' perspectives will make you more effective at work. If you are a Millennial, overcoming the negative stereotype requires that you convey the following core message through your behavior, day in and day out: I'm here to work hard, contribute to the organization, learn from you, and develop my skills. If you manage Millennials, your daily behavior should transmit this message: I value and trust you, am committed to helping you perform at your best, and care about the quality of your experience in this organization.

Improving your ability to relate to Millennials will make you a better manager of all your employees. Because despite what the stereotype might suggest, effectively engaging Millennials is not about letting employees wear jeans and bring their dogs to work, dude. The key is providing challenging, meaningful work, communicating, helping employees to see their contribution, and making sure they have opportunities to learn and grow. The best manager for Millennials, GenXers, and Baby Boomers is a person who has a coaching orientation, who is aware of employees' talents and interests, who both supports them and pushes them to perform at higher levels than they believed they could, and who cares about the quality of their experience. Work towards that, and you'll hit the intergenerational sweet spot."

The Working Woman in 2020

The Working Woman in 2020 | GWTNext -GLOBAL WORKFORCE TRANSFORMATION - PAVING THE TRAIL TO THE FUTURE. | Scoop.it
If you believe the surveys -- and parse all they commentary they create -- successful working women must find balance, as they lean forward, peering up at the glass ceiling, looking over their shoulders at coming competitors in an environment that...
Laura Goodrich's insight:

"Any peek into the future has to start with the Millennials -- an army of expectation 80 million strong in the U.S. and 2.5 billion worldwide. By 2025, Millennials will be running things, accounting for 75 percent of the available workforce.

The women in that group are both ambitious and optimistic. A recent Pew study showed that just as many young women as young men put success in a high-paying career on the list of things important in their lives. And for the first time, more young women than young men put career success at the top of their values. Other studies show that desire for greater job responsibility also show young women talking the lead."

"Combine upward pressure of those numbers with the growing percentage of women who put career success at the top of their life's goals, Add in the urgent need to find talent to replace the departing baby boomers. Multiply that by the fact that in a little more than ten years, a new generation raised with men and women working together will be fully in charge, and those stubborn cultural mindsets will be replaced by new ones."
