3 Essential Elements of Strategic Thinking | Creative GapMinding

After years of talking strategy with business partners I have come to the conclusion that most of us don’t know what strategic thinking really is. Most of what we call strategic thinking is really not that strategic.

Thinking comes in many forms:

Howard Gardner talks about five in his book Five Minds for the Future, and describes at least six kinds of intelligence in his other writingsEdward de Bono describes Six Thinking Hats, written specifically for thinking in a business contextI have compiled a list of about a dozen or so approaches to thinking.

Barriers to Business Agility and Insights on How to Break Them - GWTNext.com | GWTNext -GLOBAL WORKFORCE TRANSFORMATION - PAVING THE TRAIL TO THE FUTURE. | Scoop.it
To become agile, companies need to put people before processes, be they employees or customers. Change can be scary but not changing is scarier. By shedding the age-old concepts, they can achieve business agility.
Laura Goodrich's insight:

“The system is that there is no system. That doesn’t mean there are no processes. We have great processes and they make us more efficient. But that’s not what it is about. It’s ad hoc meetings, talking in hallways and calling each other at 10:30 at night to discuss a new idea or something that shoots holes in how everyone’s been thinking about a problem. This is how Apple works”, said Steve Jobs, the charismatic entrepreneur, marketer, inventor and leader.

Kids these days. They’re a heck of a lot smarter than we were at their age, and their effect on our organizations and communities is going to be a lot greater than ours was, as well. Management intuition for the next 50 years | McKinsey & Company

Management intuition for the next 50 years | McKinsey & Company | GWTNext -GLOBAL WORKFORCE TRANSFORMATION - PAVING THE TRAIL TO THE FUTURE. | Scoop.it
The collision of technological disruption, rapid emerging-markets growth, and widespread aging is upending long-held assumptions that underpin strategy setting, decision making, and management. A McKinsey Quarterly article.
Laura Goodrich's insight:
"We stand today on the precipice of much bigger shifts in each of these areas, with extraordinary implications for global leaders. In the years ahead, acceleration in the scope, scale, and economic impact of technology will usher in a new age of artificial intelligence, consumer gadgetry, instant communication, and boundless information while shaking up business in unimaginable ways. At the same time, the shifting locus of economic activity and dynamism, to emerging markets and to cities within those markets, will give rise to a new class of global competitors. Growth in emerging markets will occur in tandem with the rapid aging of the world’s population—first in the West and later in the emerging markets themselves—that in turn will create a massive set of economic strains.
Any one of these shifts, on its own, would be among the largest economic forces the global economy has ever seen. As they collide, they will produce change so significant that much of the management intuition that has served us in the past will become irrelevant. The formative experiences for many of today’s senior executives came as these forces were starting to gain steam. The world ahead will be less benign, with more discontinuity and volatility and with long-term charts no longer looking like smooth upward curves, long-held assumptions giving way, and seemingly powerful business models becoming upended. In this article, which brings together years of research by the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) and McKinsey’s Strategy Practice,1 we strive to paint a picture of the road ahead, how it differs from the one we’ve been on, and what those differences mean for senior executives as they chart a path for the years to come." Change leader, change thyself | McKinsey & Company

Change leader, change thyself | McKinsey & Company | GWTNext -GLOBAL WORKFORCE TRANSFORMATION - PAVING THE TRAIL TO THE FUTURE. | Scoop.it
Anyone who pulls the organization in new directions must look inward as well as outward. A McKinsey Quarterly article.
Laura Goodrich's insight:

"A new strategy will fall short of its potential if it fails to address the underlying mind-sets and capabilities of the people who will execute it.

McKinsey research and client experience suggest that half of all efforts to transform organizational performance fail either because senior managers don’t act as role models for change or because people in the organization defend the status quo.2 In other words, despite the stated change goals, people on the ground tend to behave as they did before. Equally, the same McKinsey research indicates that if companies can identify and address pervasive mind-sets at the outset, they are four times more likely to succeed in organizational-change efforts than are companies that overlook this stage.

In our work together with organizations undertaking leadership and cultural transformations, we’ve found that the best way to achieve an organization’s aspirations is to combine efforts that look outward with those that look inward. Linking strategic and systemic intervention to genuine self-discovery and self-development by leaders is a far better path to embracing the vision of the organization and to realizing its business goals."

You can’t predict the future, but what we can do is make very well-informed maps of possible plausible futures. | GWTNext -GLOBAL WORKFORCE TRANSFORMATION - PAVING THE TRAIL TO THE FUTURE. | Scoop.it
Home ownership is not so much a dream for young people. It is more of a mirage. The closer they seem to get to it, the more rising prices and uncertain employment keep those front door keys out of reach.
Laura Goodrich's insight:

"Companies need to look outside the areas of their business to spot the trends that will affect their future.

One of the challenges for companies is to be able to see past what they already know to discover what they don’t know.

Companies may have to rethink what employment means. They may have to accept that their workforce is transient, and build a great alumni network so they can bring those people back in whenever they need them, wherever they are, maybe sharing them with other employers.

Talent is more accessible. There’s going to be a people cloud. Individuals will be able to work for multiple organisations at the same time.

You can’t predict the future, but what we can do is make very well-informed maps of possible plausible futures and make sure strategies are effective, no matter what the future turns out to be.

The future is coming at us, whether we can do something about it or not."

The 9-to-5 job is dying. But what will an increasingly independent workforce mean for the economy?
Laura Goodrich's insight:

"We’ve seen glimpses of the looming changes already: freelancers now make up 34%—that's 53 million people—of the U.S. workforce, according to a 2014 survey by Edelman Berland. WATCH OUR SERIES SYNTHESIS VIDEO

"Watch the final video that caps the entire Reinvent the University for the Whole Person series. The 15-minute documentary-style video synthesizes what we accomplished through the work of all six roundtables and weaves together the very best contributions from 40 top-tier experts and innovators who helped figure out how universities could integrate the best aspects of a liberal arts education for the whole person with the new possibilities of digital tools, the online world, and the learning sciences.

The piece makes the case that universities are poised at this unique moment in history to design learning environments using the best of both online and offline techniques that could prepare students better than ever before for a career and life of change. This kind of whole person education, one that’s geared to produce adaptable workers, creative citizens and fulfilled human beings, has the potential to scale and reach well beyond elite institutions to help much larger numbers of students succeed.

However, much needs to be done to shake higher education from its self-imposed constraints to reach that promised land. The series lays out many needed steps – such as coming up with new metrics for measuring more complex and nuanced outcomes, or clearing space within universities for more entrepreneurial experimentation. To get more on the final synthesis of the project: read more

Both Kansas City, Mo., and Kansas City, Kan., have Google Fiber, a high-speed fiber-optic network, and are having a hard time figuring out what to do with so much power.
Laura Goodrich's insight:

"The whole premise of this story was no one knows what to do with 1 gigabit internet speeds. It's obvious to me, and to Google, which is laying all the fiber optic lines: interactive group video.

Clearly this is all part of a grand strategy that started with Google buying Youtube, then throwing resources at developing group video in the form of G+ Hangouts, and now Google is helping accelerate getting fiber optic to the home in a critical mass of cities.

It's all about video. Once you get those speeds, you will be able to have seamless, glitch-free interactive HD video between as many people as you want. At that point almost all things you could do in face-to-face physical settings will be able to be done virtually.

Our company Reinventors Network has been tracking this inevitable development for the last two years and are committed to pioneering this new medium. Right now group video works good enough on existing bandwidth but it is only going to get better, and when it crosses the threshold into 1 gigabit terrain, it will be a whole new world.

Looking forward to it. Odd how the reporter and everyone interviewed in this story was clueless."

Laura Goodrich's insight:

"Manufacturing isn't the "dirty" job of old, but rather quite the opposite as there is a real opportunity to educate Millennials on the increasingly innovative environment of manufacturing and the role they can play in driving the industry forward. In fact, we are currently undergoing a "manufacturing renaissance" as more companies look to produce on American soil again. With that, an urgent and growing need now exists. While the number of job opportunities continues to increase, we are battling archaic ideas alongside a current skilled labor force that is drastically aging out. According to 2013 reports, for every four trade positions professionals retire from, the industry is producing only one replacement." Dan Campbell is founder/CEO of Hire Dynamics and 2014 chairman of the American Staffing Association.
