Library system has $250,000 for new books, thanks to Bucks for Books campaign | Cha-Ching | Scoop.it

The campaign –in which the newspaper matched many individual contributions, and which was spurred on by a personal donation by the newspaper’s publisher –raised a total of $250,976.73 for the library to use for the purchase of new print materials, said Library Director Mary Jean Jakubowski. The drive ran from early September until Oct. 30.

Friends of McIver's Grant Public Library have the perfect gift item for residents this holiday season - one that shares both the nostalgia of the past and a vision for the future. Christmas ornaments featuring the current McIver's Grant Public Library building, cast in resin and hand painted by Hestia creations of Massachusetts, are now available for $25. The ornaments, which come with a unique stand, may be enjoyed either adorning the tree for the holidays or in the curio year-round.

The director of the Flint Public Library says a gift from filmmaker Michael Moore "comes at a great time for us." Director Kay Schwartz said she found out just a few days ago that Moore is donating 2,000 copies of his new book, "Here Comes Trouble: Stories From My Life," to be used as a fundraiser for the library. In a news release, Moore said he had purchased the books and will hand them over to the library so that they can be sold. The Flint native said he hopes to raise $10,000 to $20,000 for the library.

Raffle supports Riverview Library

A new raffle campaign has been launched by the Riverview Public Library, with all funds raised to be used to enhance youth program material. The raffle was heavily supported by local businesses who have donated more than $1,500 worth of prizes.

Viola Public Library Events

On Saturday Feb. 18, 2012 the library will have its Annual "Are You Smarter Than a Librarian" Trivia Fundraiser. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the game starts at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $10 per person and teams are limited to eight members. There will be ten rounds with ten questions each. Mulligans can be purchased for $1 each (limit of 6) with one mulligan allowed per round. There will be various raffle items and team prizes will be awarded during the game. This is our big fundraiser for the year, so plan on attending and having a good time.

The West Falmouth Library Community Events Committee is excited to be hosting the library’s first beer tasting event, “Beer Lovers for Book Covers”. With the sponsorship by Cape Cod Beer and the help of local caterer, Chef Roland and other businesses, this fundraising event is one you won’t want to miss. Over 300 local residents attended the inaugural Delicious Destinations fundraiser at Crowell Public Library Saturday evening. The Ports of Call theme led attendees from Barcelona to Shanghai, Venice and the Caribbean with samplings of exotic local foods, wines and beers from each region. San Marino Dance group, opera singer Melodee Fernandez, steel drum player Emile Borde, world known Guzheng player, Celia Liu and classical Spanish guitarists Westside Duo and other talented entertainers provided an unforgettable journey for San Marino patrons of the arts.

Massillon Public Library hosts cookie contest

The only thing better than a book is a book and a cookie and the Massillon Public Library and Massillon Kiwanis are sponsoring a HOLIDAY COOKIE CONTEST. Cookies must be brought to the library auditorium along with a $10 entry fee between noon and 4:30 p.m. Friday. During the Polar Express Open House 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 19, the public is invited to judge samples of the cookies entered in the contest. For $1, tasters will receive a plate of samples, a glass of milk, and a ballot. Three prizes will be awarded at 3 p.m. Proceeds will go to Kiwanis children’s charities and library programs.

For “Taste of the Valley,” two local wineries, Allegro Vineyards and Logan’s View Winery, are at the center of the festivities. The admission price of $30 includes an etched souvenir wine glass for sampling a variety of wines, plus an array of appetizers and desserts.

The Wareham Free Library was turned into a mini-golf course for a fundraiser to buy supplies and books. Some of the holes were more intricate than others, this one features a series of tunnels and ramps for the ball to go through.

Library gears up for SPOOKTACULAR

The Sparwood Public Library is getting ready for its biggest fundraiser of the year. The bi-annual event known as Spooktacular is an adults only evening filled with fun and excitement for everyone attending. The main highlights of the evening will be a silent auction with many items donated by local businesses, individuals and vendors, several art displays by local artists, wine and cheese, and of course costumes. Dressing up is optional, but this year’s fun theme is Egyptian.

Grant seeking is a marketing process. Simply stated, you define your library’s need and sell it to one who can fund your project. Librarians are their own best grant-proposal writers. No outsider can write a proposal as effectively as a “library insider” who fully understands the institution’s mission and priorities as well as the needs of the community it serves.
